The article does not state what will and won't count as a large party. The mayor claims most of these happen at rental properties.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-53680761
The mayor of Los Angeles has said the city will be authorised to shut off water and power to properties where large parties and gatherings are held despite restrictions imposed to curb the spread of coronavirus.

Eric Garcetti said house parties had become "nightclubs in the hills" and that the focus would be on gatherings "posing significant public dangers".

The rule comes into force on Friday.

isn't endangering a child illegal though? holding giant parties during a pandemic counts as endangering i'd imagine.

People who have kids and are throwing covid parties probably should have their kids taken away from them.

Seems like this is the wrong way to punish people spreading covid.

Right, so why don't they prosecute them rather than try to kill them with heat exhaustion?

Seems equally as irresponsible to cut water from houses during a pandemic

Maybe they should pull the trigger on the whole block and when people call in to ask "WTF", they just say "Your neighbor at 212 Bay Drive was throwing an illegal party, blame them".

It's generally illegal for a parent to have a child in a house without running water and/ or electricity.

That's what I thought. But I thought if you have issues paying your water/electric bill but have a child in the house they cant just turn it off or something? I dont recall the exact law or anything but I feel doing it for this reason infringes on that law.

As for "the party is illegal/child endangerment", the children dont actually have to be present at the party for it to still be an issue for the children.

they could bend the rules a little. maybe find a fitting punishment for party parents with kids if they own/rent the house.

Idk about you guys, but cutting people's power and water for reasons other than not paying your bill is an extremely problematic notion and extraordinarily authoritarian. Send people over to take care of the problem or fine them. But shutting their stuff off aint it.

And risk spreading covid19 even more? Rather not send people if we can help it.

Yet, "you were bad and naughty" is apparently a perfectly good reason, I guess.

Then send them a fine and increase the fine for each occurrence after. Making people unable to shower and wash their hands aint exactly gonna help stop the spread either. Its a stupid plan with dangerous implications no matter how you look at it.

Fines are better sure, not sending people over. Most of those people at the party aren't going to be washing much anyways. And if power and water is restored after people leave, it doesnt really hurt much.
