The humor ranges from obvious to quite subtle, and I could watch it a hundred times and still miss something. One of the few movies I can think of that more than earns its cult following. Hot Fuzz: Like Big Lebowski, its one of those rare comedies that ages like wine, and only gets better the more times you watch it. Edgar Wright is one of the few directors I can think of whose subtle visual comedy is just as good as the standard jokes and character interactions. And while I doubt the first two acts of the movie get the love they deserve, Hot Fuzz does admittedly have my second-favorite 3rd act payoff in all of film, right after The Incredibles. Spaceballs: earns its right in the pantheon by being not only the first parody, but the first movie in general I have clear memory of watching obsessively, at the tender age of 4, long before I watched the very movies it was parodying. Had an unmistakable effect on my ability to both recognize and deconstruct tropes. Monty Python and the Holy Grail: not much I can say here that most people don't already know. MP are the godfathers of silly, absurdist humor, and their influence is still felt today (assuming modern comedians aren't just blatantly ripping them off). While I enjoy the Flying Circus series more overall, and Life of Brian has much tighter focus and a better ending, Holy Grail is probably the best concentrated example of their zaniness. And I never would have gotten into any of their works if my nerds friends hadn't overquoted Holy Grail to the point where I had to sit down and watch it myself. Kung Pow:Enter the Fist: definitely the shakiest entry on the list, as most everything in this movie involving original footage / CGI is absolute trash. But everything involving dubbed footage is pure comedy gold. Earns its right in the pantheon by, surprisingly, being the most quoted movie out of every movie in this list - years after my last viewing, there remains an applicable Kung Pow quote for nearly every situation in daily life, and half the time I don't even realize I'm quoting it. Honorable Mention - Deadpool: as much as I'd like to round out my list with something more classic or highbrow, I cannot deny that I watched this movie a probably a dozen times over the span of a couple weeks and laughed myself silly every time. After a certain point, I became convinced that feature-length comedies made after the mid-2000s were just incapable of being genuinely funny - so while I would probably put more established classics like This is Spinal Tap higher in the ranking, Deadpool earns honorable mention by finally breaking that unfunny streak. Comedies that Didn't Age Well (IMO) Super Troopers: absolutely adored this movie when I was in college, but really struggled to find close to that level of enjoyment on a recent rewatch History of the World Part 1: way too reliant on easy lowbrow humor, something that Mel Brooks balances a lot better in his other movies.
