why was he looking to basically become dictator. Was there anything he was specifically trying to achieve? Whats his... deal?

Who would try and fail twice over the course of ~50 years to just be dictator and end it at that? Does Star Wars Space have gay marriage and that really rustled his jimmies and he wanted to stop at no costs to end it?

i dont get it, man.

He succeed at becoming ruler of the galaxy actually. He ruled it for what, like maybe 25 years before he lost his seat?

Given, his revival in the Disney trilogy doesn't make any sense, he had the means to sill rule the galaxy, but just decided not to, even though that was still his desire.

It makes plenty of sense. People are just dumb and want to hate it. He nearly or actually died and became very weak through whatever method he used to sustain his life. When this happened the empire crumbled and he lost grip on it. The first order was basically his fanatics regrouping where they eventually did succeed in destroying the new republic in the new trilogy. He ultimately decided to move out in episode 9 because no meaningful threat remained other than Rey.

I honestly think the whole Palpatine being alive all along is not an inherently bad idea. In the end Palpatine was the only villain that really made sense for the skywalker line. It was just executed like dog shit.

That wasn't Goku that was clearly Mary Poppins.

Also that was the dumbest thing I've ever seen in any movie I've ever watched. I think I audibly said "what the fuck" in the theater just out of pure reflex. I remember hearing other people sitting near me mumbling about it, too.

No it doesn't. He was dead. Disney just created a plot hole for no reason.

He wanted to create a sith society where might made right, technological advancements werent held back by ethics, and the greatest moral pursuit was based on finding personal pleasure and becoming stronger.

Basically bioshock world.

That's a good question. I mean he basically spend his time as the galaxy's most powerful man sitting alone in a dark room. I can do that without any power.

It was not like he was partying with pretty girls all day or having speeches in front of large crowds or something. We have nothing indicating that he ever enjoyed himself while in power.

There was an explanation given in the novels, but that all became non-canon with Disney.

It really isn't a plot hole. Resurrection is like the whole reason Anakin goes Sith. It's also what his master was mentioned by Palpatine to be able to do. The plot had actual plausibility and background to work It just was poorly built up.

I mean that's a whole other discussion. I would have loved to actually move past the god damn skywalkers but it was where they threw us so I'm just talking about in the context of the setting we had. It definitely was a weak choice to not to do just an entirely new set of characters.

He only cared about more power. Pretty straightforward character. He didn't care about the Empire.

Palpatines goals were in the old canon

Racism: With the old canon he wanted to purge the galaxy of all non human races (including mandalorians and blue skinned) however he did think some races could be useful and would make deals that were hypocritical to his plan. Similar to Hitler allying with the Japanese while spouting the aryan rhetoric

Control: He knew that anyone around him could betray him at anytime. If he could bring fear to the universe no one would stand against him. Jedi being trained to suppress fear were natural enemies. Sith also were enemies so they needed to be purged to ensure his dominance.

Immortality: Palpatine can uses the force to jump ship similar to the vampire lord in the Strain series. This is why he had the red guard on hand. If something were to go wrong he could leave his old body. The skywalker family was an experiment to male a perfect host. He wanted a body that wouldn't break down after shooting lightning 3 times. He wants a perfect body and from there it is just cloning. If this was successful eventually the empire would have been discarded as it was only a means to an end. This being said he would most likely destroy the next seat of power to prevent any group being powerful enough to destroy him.

Tl:DR emporer palpatine was trying to be randall flagg from the stand.

Different settings so different people with the same name. Though I think King might have made Eyes of the Dragon and Dark Tower take place in the same universe so same dude there if I'm remembering right.

In Legends Darth Bane trilogy, Darth Banes philosophy on the Order of the Sith Lords was that the Sith Master and the apprentice should seek power for the sake of power, and nothing else.

So Palpatine sought power for the sake of power, and nothing else.
