Just keep your valuables on a hidden travel wallet strapped under your shirt or something and put your dirty underwear at the top of a shitty backpack strapped to your leg. If you're super concerned, go to the market and buy cheap clothes for yourself there so you don't look like a gringo. The Amtrak trains I've taken in the US were shitty. Pretty much all the rail lines in the US are owned by companies that make way more money on shipping freight so passenger trains get shunted off on sidings so freight can move by, so the trains never run on time.
