Started the month reading Victor Lavalle's The Changeling, after being so impressed by The Devil In Silver. While it wasn't nearly as scary as Devil in Silver, I wasn't disappointed at all as it basically read like a modern day urban fairytale with truly engrossing characters.

After that, I went to pick up Silvia Moreno-Garcia's Mexican Gothic only for it to be sold out pretty much everywhere, even Amazon at the time, so I put in an order for it and instead picked up Stephen Graham Jones' The Only Good Indians on a whim. Only thing I've read of SGJ prior was a short story Father, Son, Holy Rabbit, which probably had the most wtf twist I've read in a story. The book itself was amazing, a weird, dark revenge story that moves quickly and left me extremely satisfied. If you want a truly brutal story, this is where I'd point you to.

Finally, with that done, I got around to reading Mexican Gothic, which I just finished, and goddamn if that's not going to be one of my favorite horror stories of all time. I'm just waiting on the book to be picked up as a movie, because it's going to absolutely shine on the screen. Such a unique setting, strong female characters, and a curse that's equally tragic and horrifying, with astounding visuals.

I'm assuming you've read The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor too? Also, add Brandon Massey to your list.

Not particularly. I'm not only reading POC horror authors, but I realised that I had a sad lack of diversity in my horror(which is almost entirely white male, very few POC and only a few women) and these three books I've been anticipating reading, so it worked well. My next author is Brian Evanson, so breaking the streak, but I'm gonna be reading more from those three at least in the future. Also want to pick up Catherine House, my book club read it but I haven't been able to get to it.

I'm actually going to read Black Tom again soon, because while I have read it I actually disliked it and it put me off Lavalle for awhile, but after loving two of his books in a row I need to revisit it.

If you're willing to investigate horror films by people of color, Ganja and Hess is an excellent fusion of blaxploitation with Euro-style horror, made during a time when both were in their prime. The director of the film also wrote its screenplay and played a major role (the male lead role belongs to Duane Jones, of Night of the Living Dead).

I've watched very little blaxploitation, I need to get on that. Been meaning to watch Bones, I'll throw that on the list as well
