And no, I don't support this action because the government reasoning is not just.

But to pretend China having more information on US citizens is not something unusually dangerous or sinister is also naive.

I think our government should protect our information from all entities.

Is China having our info good? Absolutely not.

But in the long run its completely meaningless if we dont pass legislation to protect us from other non-governmental groups as well.

I dont think anyone is saying otherwise dude lol. And the example i provided was just one of many that could be negatives on you. You seem to equate "other companies do it and they are worse" as "tiktok is harmless" when what people are trying to say is its not harmless.

Nah, my position is that banning TikTok merely sets a bad precedent of executive overreach and doesnt actually protect us at all.

Also i think people don't realize the extent that we are quite literally in an essential cold war with China and Russia. And that war is primarily being fought over the internet.

The information they collect, which is basically full blanket access to your internet usage can easily be utilized to allocate what is a very vast interference and propoganda campaign on social media.

The more info they have, the better they can understand how to influence American's and basically sow more seeds of chaos.

Maybe I'm desensitized to privacy concerns because I work in internet advertising, but I'm a little skeptical of TikTok's danger to national security.

It made sense when something similar happened to Grindr last year, but I don't think TikTok poses the same inherent risk.

You definitely seem desensitized. There is a huge (mis) information campaign being waged daily. It's very effective. It is part of the reason our covid response is so bad.

There's also a lot of misinformation and misunderstandings on how targeted advertising works. I don't doubt that other countries are trying to influence things, but I think the scale is a little overrated. I also don't think the sort of user profile TikTok is able to build would be even remotely comparable to something that Facebook or Google could do.

Honestly it mostly seems like a convenient scapegoat for the US government.

They aren't really after targeted advertising.

I'm sure they involved in that a bit.

I think you are projecting your own field into this when that isn't necessarily what China would be after here. Their campaign has evolved way beyond targetted advertising.

What precisely do you think they are doing then? You haven't given me a straight answer here.

Like, you seem very convinced they are doing something but unable to articulate what that is. Perhaps you've been the victim of government propaganda/disinformation from the US?

I for one am glad theyve been stopped in their reign of terror.
Do we protect the people of Zhejiang? Should we help the citizens of Taiwan or Hong Kong on their quest for independence? Should we look into the legal system and treatment of imprisoned foreigners in China?
No, no lets ban tiktok
Thats definitely the biggest issue and the one we should address first.

Data can be misused.

I can agree with that.

Foreign powers having access to more data is bad for us.

I can agree with that.

What I haven't seen happen yet is for someone to draw the line between tiktok and either of those other statements. Do I want the chinese government to have a larger pool of data with which to formulate their own plans and agendas? Of course not. But I don't feel like it's been sufficiently proven that the chinese government has access to all of tiktok's data.

Clash of Kings is a mobile game owned by a chinese company. Are we banning access to that as well? If the fact that a chinese company owns tiktok is enough to consider it a risk then why not every other app owned by a chinese company.

And unless the chinese government doesn't have access to the public facing internet then they can scrape all the same information from our own social media programs regardless.

The real answer is we need to ban their data collection, not outright ban the company.

This is something we can do instead of ban them, but of course, data collection isn't the reason for this ban in the first place so it won't happen.

They need/want our money, they would absolutely comply with data collection rules. But if we aren't willing to do that I have no doubt China will take whatever they can get.

And that's my point. This is vindictive response that doesn't sufficiently prove that it's actually solving a problem and it doesn't offer a solution to the larger problems that it purports to be related to.

What we need is legislature about data collecting/selling and some level of transparency or oversight that could be set in place.

The ban isn't legal or enforceable in any real way. But since a social network's strength depends on its size, the plain fact that the president is against could reduce its strength massively by making it less attractive.

The only real reason I can think of for the ban is to protect US data collection companies (Facebook).

Well if Tiktok really does store data on US servers than the US can still get at the data. So if people stop using Tiktok it would shut down one avenue of data collection. But other sources would likely pick up most of the slack.

Well, first of all, I stand by the idea that if it is legal it is legal. I also believe we shouldn't treat people as criminals who did nothing illegal.

That said, you can disagree with laws and hope they would change to further reinforce your beliefs. You shouldn't be deciding your beliefs are law though and acting as such. There are times where I disagree with the way the law is also, but I respect the laws as they are.

That said.

I believe finding a beautiful person beautiful or a cute person cute or whatever is natural. It is how you think about the person that can be weird. You shouldn't be viewing under age people as someone you sexually or romantically want to have an encounter / relationship with or such. That is where it becomes wrong, and I would say is definitely NOT normal.

You can think they are pretty or what not. That's normal. They aren't some voidless entity until of legal age.

So, if TheRock means you can be attracted to someone of a younger than legal age and says it is natural, it could be theoretically not weird depending on how he meant it I guess. Attraction could mean find someone good looking or such. Elsewise it could mean a person in which you want to pursue a sexual or romantic relationship with. The latter is a bit worrisome.

So, I won't condemn him without context provided.
