Right, but Tiktok is literally a Chinese spy app.

I thought it wasn't owned by the chinese government and user data isn't even kept on chinese servers? I don't see how user data from tiktok is any more of a risk than user data from facebook and twitter.

well, there's a certain (unnamed) country which, for example has tried to have encryption outlawed as munitions about 25 years ago, has been silently and unaccountably been ordering websites to turn over user data and has also cracked made substantial inroads into undermining HTTPS, the fundamental security bedrock of the internet.

This country does not own the companies it has obtained data on and in fact data centers outside of the country's boarders (but still owned by a business primarily operating out of the country) have even more widespread permission to carte blanche steal this data.

Lets say the Chinese government really is getting the data from TikTok... what could the practical consequence of that be? What are they going to do with a random American teens contacts or whatever?

I'm very likely and admittedly naive here, but whether it's China or American corporations who own our government anyway, what difference does it make which overreaching regime spies on buffoons making videos of themselves dancing to kpop? Somehow it's worse if it's China and not Facebook? Again, I'm completely oblivious to the substantial difference in importance and would like someone to help me understand.

On a micro level, sure there might not be much difference for the average user between Facebook or China having your personal info, however on a macro level, China having access to tons of personal information is worse. They are more powerful, less responsive to external factors, and are more committed to anti-democratic expansion.

Its still has long reaching potential

Chinas continuining to expand in its investments, and with how trash our covid response is our economy and business are pretty ripe for their money to grab some power. This isnt a major concern right now, but one example of how it can affect you down the road is chinese owned/influenced corporations not allowing you to work for them, all because you said free hong kong on facebook 15 years ago and you left yourself open with a silly tik tok app.

Even if this is true (or even if it's not true but you believe this - not really interested in debating that since it's not relevant), do you not see why the government would want to try maintain an advantage on data collection where possible?

Think of it more "The US government wants to be the only group with this data to do as they please with" than "The US Government is trying to protect its citizens by keeping their data out of China's hands"

The data they collect wont let you work at one of their publicly owned corporations

Is that really all the justification the American government needs to shut down businesses now?

American businesses buy and sell our data, including our medical information, literally every single day, and the government isnt doing shit about it.

China is literally becoming a full realization of the Orwellian nightmare. If you see that happening and your first instinct is what-aboutism talking about how shitty America is (which it is, granted, in it's own very different ways) then you need to assess your priorities.

Of course none of this actually has anything to do with this ban; Trump's probably just salty about his rallies being killed.

I dont think anyone is saying otherwise dude lol. And the example i provided was just one of many that could be negatives on you. You seem to equate "other companies do it and they are worse" as "tiktok is harmless" when what people are trying to say is its not harmless.
