After 5 years of service, it gave out.

Bought it a few months after release and it has been one of my most played consoles ever.

Strangely enough, my regular 3ds's battery still works fine. And that one's even older than my XL.

And to those wondering, there's a hardware store near my place that accepts rechargeable battery disposal, so no worries there.

Anybody here had a similar experience?

New... Is the model name...

And it does make a difference. Nintendo calls that model the New Nintendo 3DS, and you can't even transfer your games from it to a non New 3DS model. Freaking sucks.

Happened with my PSP. I think it was because of the heat that summer and I needed to store it somewhere cooler.

That's just the name of that particular line of 3DS, haha. The "new" ones have the c stick/nipple and they can read amiibo without the amiibo reader attachment accessory.

I don't think I'd seen it called a nipple before and now I'm dying.

Yeah, I was looking at that, but $5 shipping is kinda throwing me off.

Might just go to amazon and get a third party one.

But not anytime soon though. I've mostly moved on to my Switch.

says the max you can order is 2, so get 2 to make it worth the shipping?

I haven't used my 3ds since I got my Switch so getting 2 new batteries for a system I'd barely use now seems like a waste.

I'll just leave my 3ds as-is for now.

This tends to happen if you don't let a battery full discharge, and instead start plugging it in with greater frequency. The reactions in the battery create various gases, which slowly warp the inside of the battery.

What likely happened with you is that your battery started to lose its charge, slowly at first. So you'd plug it in more, leave it plugged in more often. This process will accelerate until it finally stops holding a charge at all. And every now and then, it explodes.

My New 3DS Ambassador model did the same this year, also after 5 years of service. Just got a new battery for it last week, works great and the back case luckily wasn't damaged.
