Am I that only one who is sick of hearing about it, one way or the other? For a group that composes such a small percentage of humanity, we sure hear about them a lot.

Maybe because people are still being murdered and assaulted and generally treated like shit for being trans and society needs to change.

The trans movement is trying to normalize being trans. One way to normalize things is by talking about it all the time and getting it out of the shadows.

You come to a board that discusses it regularly.

There are lots of social issues being looked at and addressed now because nobody was willing to talk about them before. The internet has opened up a wide and bold new platform for people to speak their minds and express their views. I can understand if it gets a little tiring, but you don't make progress on these types of things by never talking about them. Race, trans rights, the economy, ecology, etc, etc... these are conversations people need to have. And the adapt-or-bust mentality is how humanity has always decided what is or isn't right in the world.

If I'm tired of anything, though, it's cancel culture and the attitudes of people that are just out to shut others down without trying to educate them or understand their viewpoints. That shit really needs to go.

They're still highly discriminated against (violently in a lot of cases) and are trying to gain recognition and equality.

And you shouldn't discount people's struggles just because they're a small percentage. The numbers i'm finding estimate 355/100,000 people who identify as trans, so if that number is accurate that means there's around 27-28 million trans people in the world. That's a lot of people.

Maybe the increase in trans numbers comes from all the teenagers suddenly announcing theyre trans because its cool? To say nothing of the potentially permanent effects of taking hormones to transition during puberty.

Or more likely there are increasing numbers of openly trans people because society has become somewhat more accepting of it (not enough) and medical treatments are better. In the past people would largely stay closeted, often suffering from severe dysphoria.

Population growth is unsustainable for a number of reasons, including the way we are changing the environment.

So you find a lot of little ways to change it and it can start adding up to a big difference.

Far more intelligent people than you or I are trying to figure this out.

It doesn't say anything about trans specifically, but it does beg the question. In the entire history of humanity, why hasn't the trans issue been a widespread trend before?

Many things, perhaps even most things, have not been widespread trends until now. We didn't have the communication infrastructure for that until recently.

Honestly, I haven't heard about "trans people" today as an issue at any point prior to your topic.

Perhaps you're frequenting places with a lot of trans discussion?

I suppose you could be right, but I'm not sure it has anything to do with technology. Humans have always been a social species, it's just kinda odd it hasn't popped up before even on a lesser scale. Though I'm not saying individuals haven't felt like this before.

I mean, it has popped up on a lesser scale, in that there are societies than consider trans people a 'third gender' and/or sacred.

Unfortunately, it is more common that they get killed. We're in a unique situation, historically and geopolitically speaking.

Because there are so few of them and they were typically renounced in the past so coming out or trying to talk about the issues was almost impossible. Technology is the leap that made it infinitely more possible because now people can talk about it with anonymity and without fear of repercussion and because of that, now people are able to talk about it more openly. I'd say technology was a huge help.

I think this is the thing. It depends on the areas of the internet you frequent. I follow a lotta folks on Twitter who discuss political stuff so I see it constantly.
