She was born July 1, 1916, and died yesterday at 104 years of age. She was the last remaining movie star from the golden age of Hollywood, and was probably best known for her role as Melanie Hamilton in Gone with the Wind. Her sister was Joan Fontaine, who died in 2013 at age 96.

Especially when most actors and actresses from her era died in their 60s.

Usually poor, alone, and unmourned in a nursing home somewhere, after a last few bitter decades of life.

Very few of the Studio Era actors seem to have happy endings.
