I think there was a large flood in a region of the ancient middle east that inspired the stories. I don't think there was a global flood that covered the entire planet

There was definitely a massive flood. Whether it was global or not, who knows.

It's like the Jesus thing. He was undoubtedly a real person

This. One of the seas in the region flooded into another nearby sea which at the time was a freshwater lake (sediment samples confirmed this) and many civilizations living around the lake all had their own stories about the event, as it upended their lives completely within a matter of just a few days and was thus relatively apocalyptic in terms of their cultures and ways of life as entire masses of people had to relocate.

The vast majority of societies throughout history developed near rivers, and rivers flood. It makes sense that in many places there was a particularly big one that became the stuff of legends

massive floods have happened many times throughout human history.

if something like Hurricane Katrina happened hundreds of years ago, for example, you couldn't fault a person for believing that it was the end of the world.

literally came in here to say this.literally the first thing you're taught about post-stone age civilization are civilizations popping up around the tigris and euphrates. All the stories about a great flood, including the judeo christian noah flood, originate into some event that caused a lot of flooding in Sumeria.

what makes you say that? I don't believe Jesus ever existed and I never understand people who say there is proof.

The very fact anyone questions his existence shows how compelling the witness of the New Testament is.

So many historical figures have less record about them but nope you gotta question if Jesus even existed. Why?
Him existing doesn't mean you can't say all the stuff about him doing miracles was made up. So literally what is the point of questioning it?

For example, someone mentioned today about Jesus never laughing and Socrates never crying.

Consider them in parallel:

https://vridar.org/2011/07/16/was-socrates-a-man-or-a-myth-applying-historical-jesus-criteria-to-socrates/
https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Socrates
https://www.quora.com/How-sure-are-historians-that-Socrates-was-a-real-person
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socratic_problem

Now, it may be some historian question if socrates was a real person, but I have never met a real regular person who did question it. But I have met people like you who question Jesus.
My only thought to this is there is a political bias here. Somewhere in your subconscious you feel there is something to gain by denying the historicity of Jesus. And to be frank, you don't make any better points doing that then people who said the miracles were made up. Infact, you rather destroy your credibility because you no doubt believe in other historical figures with less proof, maybe not Socrates but some.

There was also a Kevin Costner movie about it so it is undoubtedly real.

The Romans kept records of everyone they crucified, for some reason. Yeshua was one of those.

There have been several massive floods, not one world-dominating one. The flood myth is common because early society could grow fastest with the vast resources gained from flood plains and coasts.
