Turns out the 70% of your normal wages is the high point, argued for by Trump and his team. The Senate Republicans are arguing for 50% of whatever your state unemployment benefits were before all this started. Not only that, but for those who think the Democrats will fix this and get the benefit much closer if not $600 again...the Republicans are forcing their hand. They are using liability protections for businesses (retroactive I might add) to press the Democrats into caving, they can either agree to the substantially lower unemployment benefits and get concessions on liability protection, or they can fight to get the benefit raised at the expense of your employer getting to do whatever the fuck they want to you without you being able to sue them.

oh and the rent eviction moratorium expired today

it's legitimately crazy that lobbyist are strong enough that corporations are getting legal protections for having their workers come back unsafely

End first past the post voting.

So, with the unemployment rate (about 18%) as high as it is, and the amount of people facing eviction when protections run out, they want to cut unemployed people's income (in MO the most you can draw is 320 a week, a lot of states are way lower) by 2/3s or more. That extra money is what actually kept people being able to spend money during the lockdown, which is what kept the economy afloat. The American economy functions on never ending consumer spending. Cut that by 2/3s when almost one in five are out of work and you setting the stage for a complete and total collapse. All those restaurants and businesses that were able to stay afloat by doing carryout and curbside services will be gone because people will not have the disposable income to spend on anything.

Oh I know that's their mentality, but this seems a pretty clear chain of events that WILL happen if this passes as it is. Which seems like a pretty easy way to wreck Trump's re-election chances and the GOP's hope of retaining control of the Senate. It's just so short-sighted for a group of people so focused on keeping themselves in power. I guess they are really leaning in on the voter suppression strategy and hoping that will be enough to keep them safe.

@ScazarMeltex

This is the plan though.

Its so obvious Trump is going to lose really bad that this is their last ditch effort to fuck the Dems ("oWn dA LiBz!") and guarantee they have talking points (weak economy) to get back seats in 2022/2024.

I think it's just hubris. They saw good jobs numbers and think the worst of it is over. The last time the GOP was in the driver's seat during a recession was under bush and that was a minor recession. I'm not sure they remember how this could go down

Or think more evil, they know trump is fucked in November and they can say the economic collapse we're heading for will be all Biden's fault.

i dont know how this can lead towards anything other than social/economic collapse in the weeks/months to come. official estimates of unemployment are like 15%, but when you look at the numbers of ppl actually filing for unemployment or the percentage of the adult population filing, it's even higher

Unless it's all a play to force states to reopen. Given the number of jobless who will be facing eviction, there will be significant grass root pressure to provide job opportunities if there is a belief that there is no way to get more Federal money.

Apparently there are still something federal protections for at least some people with mortgages and renters. Without yeah, we'd be heading for an UGLY societal collapse. We still might be because people will have no liquidity at all. And all of the pain coming will be completely unnecessary

You have to draw the line somewhere with this indefinite free money shit. We're doing very, very well here with covid in Canada and there's another 2 months of free government payments (CERB), $2000 a month for each family members, some big families getting $10,000+ a month and they spend all day every day playing at the parks, beach etc during work hours. Some refuse to go back to work because they're making to much on the CERB.

Working aged adults packing beaches, parks during work hours all day every day. These guys are having the time of their lives.
