The dialogue appears slowly, making you mash a mutton to speed it up, instead of just showing up instantly? Who the FUCK sat around a table and decided this was a good idea?

The idea of it was that you read it at a conversational pace. Some games even had characters react to dialogue in real time when the shocking info appeared for example.

A lot of games use this to great effect. Speeding it up to show a character rambling, presenting it instantly to emulate a LOUD DECLARATION! Etc. Ace Attorney games manipulate text speed masterfully
