Then I went to europe and realized: these people just do not build rails. Steps leading up and down mountain paths without any handrails whatsoever!

I always wondered how it's basically at least the year 3000 in middle earth, yet they are unable to nuke Mordor from orbit and still live in the same stone castles and use the same steel weapons.. You'd think the wars would promote some progress in that field over the millennia..

its not the year 3000 AD. Middle Earth is in the past. Its supposed to be a lost age forgotten by history, of ancient earth. Tolkien claimed he "found" The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings in a book he dug up somewhere, written by a hobbit that lived like 50 thousand years ago or something

No... do you think humans in middle earth just started out with armies wearing finely rafted steel armor and weapons? (Elrond shows a glimpse of the human/elf army fighting Sauron 3000 years prior, wearing loads of advanced gear)

The funny thing is that even if he did believe in human Christianity, it still wouldn't be 2020 because the dates were fudged up a bit a thousand years ago so we don't know exactly when it is.

You... you don't need uranium to make a handrail. Hell you could literally just cut up an ent and make some rails out of it for your nearby stairs leading to the one ring.

Do elves float or something? Maybe if the creatures of the middle earth had gliding powers it would make sense for them to not be as worried about falling off precariously positioned stairs, but I know for a fact that humans cannot do that.

That's before the magic nukes went off and sent us back to the Stone Age.

Afterwards we had to eat all the elves, hobbits, dwarves, orcs, etc just to survive.

Gonna need a source on this. Because Tolkien wrote LOTR as a way to give a history to his made up language. The man was a linguist not a writer.

The Years of the Sun.
  • The First Age. Duration: 450 Years of the Trees + 583 Years of the Sun.
  • The Second Age. Duration: 3441 Years of the Sun.
  • The Third Age. Duration: 3021 Years of the Sun.
  • The Fourth Age. Duration: From 6000 years ago to 1 A.D.

https://lotr.fandom.com/wiki/Ages_of_Arda

We have about 13,000 years recorded in the age of the sun, but I mean it's not an entirely misguided question. That said, warfare 500 years ago was more like warfare 13,000 years ago than it is like warfare today so that's something to keep in mind

It was actually conceived as a mythology for England. From a letter in the 1950s:

Having set myself a task, the arrogance of which I fully recognized and trembled at: being precisely to restore to the English an epic tradition and present them with a mythology of their own: it is a wonderful thing to be told that I have succeeded, at least with those who have still the undarkened heart and mind.

yeah, this is a pretty tired trope in fantasy fiction at this point. If anything technology moves backwards. There's always some advanced ancient civilisation 10,000 years ago and meanwhile we've been fucking around with swords and robes for the last 5000 years.

I feel like it's more commonly a jrpg trope.

I always assumed it was based on the fact that in the middle ages, humanity's development grinded to a halt, while just a couple thousand years ago the Romans had aqueducts and actual sewer lines and paved roads and technology compared to "the dark ages" where people were getting the plague and shit

the whole premise of the series is that it was originally written by someone else, in a different language, and Tolkien translated it
