Current Events > I must regretfully inform that Sniper the kitten has passed away

The xray result came and he has this mega blockage in his esophagus. It's either due to a condition he was born with or a foreign object that got stuck in a very particular area. Regular blockages usually happens down lower in the intestine. With sniper it happened in the esophagus area, which they have to remove ribcage, obscured behind lungs. To even check it already is a big risk. None of the doctor in the clinic (i was referred to a bigger one) has done something like that, especially to a cat as small as Sniper.

I could gamble and go with it, but chances are slim. Even if he lives, the condition will get worse and he will develop breathing difficulties and possibly pneumonia. He wouldn't make it past 1 in the best of condition. I have to make the hardest choice. The last thing he did is use his last ounce of energy to climb on my shoulder before the vet administered the anesthesia. He died in my arms, purring. Maybe from pain, maybe because it's his reserved napping place. It could be either or both at the same time.

The least i can do is adopt another abandoned animal and try my best too with them. Probably gonna take some time as i recover and grief first.

It was hard. The hardest thing i did in my life probably. I made sure i stayed with him in the end. They did it while Sniper is in my arms. I hoped it was warm and cozy like his usual place. I made sure he looked at me in the eyes. I don't know if they understand humans crying so he might have thought my eyes looked weird

That is just the saddest thing I have read in years. I am so sorry for your loss. But it sounds like you at least made him happy for the time he had. If the last thing he wanted to do was snuggle with you, there must have been serious love there.

I already have a plan. It might be a risk, but i feel like i owe it to Sniper. I will try finding Sniper's mom. I know the cat. I know where she usually hangs. I will try to get her to like me and take care of her. Even if i can't bring her home because she's too feral, i can try at least provide her some food once a day. I only took away sniper from her because he's wounded.

that was when i cried the most. tbh. he just stood from the table (i was crouched, my upper body rested on the table my hands holding him. he stood, approached my face, sniffed my neck and slept there

this kitty had the same condition as sniper. i think reading it helped me cope that even if i let him live, he'd suffer and has generally low quality of life due of this. it's haunting really.

I didn't post much but I read through 2-3 topics you made about him and asking for advice. I was rooting for you two while lurking and it makes me sad that things worked out the way they did :(

If you had not taken him in he would have died a slow death on the street or had been too weak to fight away another animal.

You gave him the only shot at love he could have ever known.

I had a kitten named max who only lived to be 2. I came home from school in 5th grade with a friend and noticed Max was acting kind of strange. Then he starting convulsing and spinning on the floor. When he stopped I picked him up and he just died in my arms..it was pretty scarring to me

It seriously hurts. So much i brok down crying twice. I have cried for total of hours today. I am crying rn. Honestly i have headache from crying too much.

It was worth it if the final moment was comfortable to him.

There's never been a time in my 34 years that I didn't have cats. It never gets easier. Some hurt more than others.

I put down my sweetest pet ever in January and I'm still not close to being over it. She had a vascular sarcoma related to her vaccines. It would have cost me well over $10000 to even gamble on removing it, as well as she would lose half of her abdomen and likely have a terrible life if she survived the surgery, with an extremely high rate of the tumor coming back withing a week to a month.

So I let her ride it out for a month until she let me know it was getting to be too much. I had a vet come to my house. The last time we went to the vet's office, I promised her I'd never make her get in the cat carrier again.

Like yours, she died in my arms, in the comfort of the only home she ever knew.

The other cat I have isn't very affectionate. She was ferral and is very skiddish. I love her, but it doesn't fill that emptiness. My wife got another cat a month or so later despite me saying over and over that I wasn't ready. He's turned out to be the biggest asshole of a cat I've ever had.

So now I feel like I've went from having the sweetest pet I'll ever have, to barely having a pet at all.

I miss Ember every single day.
I wish you the best and hope that another wonderful animal finds you. You obviously have the correct heart for it.

Always trying to make me happy, even when she was on discomfort, this is Ember waking me up on the morning of her last day. She just had to make it as difficult as possible :

Really sad. If I'm remembering your previous topic correctly, he was on the streets and you took him in. You gave him some warmth, food and happiness in his last days where otherwise he would have just passed alone. I would take comfort in that.

If you go for the mom, the biggest thing is to try to capture/spay before releasing. You can look up TNR stuff if you're interested.

A shame about the kitten. If the mom is clearly not about humans during the TNR process, I'd get a rescue.
