i assume hank won't be this affectionate toward bobby every episode but that ending was fantastic. legit nearly cried.

it's already clear to me why this is one of those iconic sitcom heroes. his characterization in just the first episode was impeccable. i think i'm gonna enjoy hank hill far more than i did al bundy.

I'd catch it off and on back in the days when I still had cable. I didn't fully appreciate it then, but even then I knew it wasn't a bad show.

I remember watching some analysis video that lingered on KotH for a bit talking about how it was normally fairly grounded to the point that the need for it to be animated at all was questioned, but by virtue of being animated it allowed for masterful and impossible camera angles among other things.

It's been memefied on the internet pretty hard, but if one actually looks at the source material, yeah, it's a solid show that seems to be aging surprisingly well.

in episode 2, none of the parents allow their kids to learn about sex in school.

is/was that something that really happened in texas in the 90s?!

if i caught this as a kid i'd have been super put-off by the animation... and by the accents... and by hank's kinda despicable neighbor friends. most of the humor is very adult; i haven't really seen much slapstick so far.

As far as I can tell there's no plot arcs, so it won't be that type of show. But based on the first two episodes, it's what I was promised: a middle-aged white man reckoning with changes in society and challenges to his worldview, and so far, generally growing from them. Hank has prejudices but is clearly fundamentally decent, and that decency has been the backbone of the first two episodes.

Guess I just found it surprising since I encountered nothing of the sort when I took sex ed. Everyone was there. Usually when sex ed is mentioned on TV, it's from the kids' perspective, and everyone is assumed to have taken it. The education itself might not be high-quality, but everyone has taken it.

There are a few. It's not like a serial or anything most of the time, so you can drop in and out and still enjoy the show.

Grew up in texas, so the accents were effectively normal for me. But yeah, animation was definitely a small sticking point that I had to overcome. The subdued humor is probably why I didn't like it as much as the simpsons/futurama. I'd probably appreciate it volumes more if I were to give it a watchthrough now. Heck...I might just have to do that. I've currently got a deficiency of 30 min shows to watch.

King of the Hill is of one the great animated sitcoms. Just as it was getting into HD it was canceled. Shame it was too.

Never saw the last season as the last time it was on Netflix (Nearly 10 years ago now) the last season was on DVD only. And we got rid of netfix soon after.

The first four seasons are high quality. After that Mike Judge and Greg Daniels were more hands-off with the show so it dips in quality a bit, but honestly all the way through the end its still better than any animated FOX sitcom since.

Also, while the show never becomes outright serialized, there are overarching storylines that develop and change the status quo over time.

Mike Judge's performance as Hank Hill is really underappreciated, he does an outstanding job voicing that character. I totally forgot that he voiced Beavis and Butthead, he absolutely disappears into Hank.

There ARE changes in the status quo but as said before, you can enjoy it at your leisure

I will say that after a certain point, you can tell they got new writers because the newer stories create plot holes and start becoming inconsistent with whats already been established

it'll be Jarring but not unwatchable. I'm just sayin it'll happen and since you might seem like you're gonna be marathoning it, it'll be even more apparent to you

There is one story arc that its a shame they never resolved, it was getting set up as early as the first couple episodes that Luanne was actually terrible at hairdressing, but was quite gifted when it came to cars. They never end up actually give her an opportunity to succeed there that I can recall. Might have just been forgotten about since it was so early in the show.

so i watched two more episodes. they were a bit less impressive than the first two nut still enjoyable.

in the first, hank and other dads lying to their kids in a campsite so they can earb straight-arrow badges. the cultural appropriation stuff is cringe-y and unnecessary. overall it mostly just showed hank's less savory side, though in the end it protected bobby from realizing it with the bird coming back to life.

the second had a bit more kick, with hank's obsession with his guitar and joking about loving it more than peggy. liked the sweet song hank sings at the end of it.

the joke at the time with Luanne was, while she was pretty dimwitted at times, she DOES have a knack for things and is talented. Unfortunately they decided to go full on dumb blonde with her and she never recovered. Yea, First season Luanne is pretty different. Remember how she threatened Cotton? Later luanne would never do that
