In Super Paper Mario, the elaborate story led the game away from the Mario universe, so since Paper Mario: Sticker Star Ive refrained from using stories that are too complicated.

To go back to Mario, in Paper Mario: Color Splash, I avoided having a complicated story so as not to veer too far away from the Mario universe, and instead aimed for a game with more memorable events.

Since Paper Mario: Sticker Star, its no longer possible to modify Mario characters or to create original characters that touch on the Mario universe. That means that if we arent using Mario characters for bosses, we need to create original characters with designs that dont involve the Mario universe at all, like weve done with Olly and the stationery bosses.

That last one in particular sounds like pretty hard confirmation of the rumored Miyamoto fuckery, which demanded they couldn't make unique characters anymore.

Well, pack it up boys. The Paper Mario we grew up with and love, is dead lol.

Sounds like they can make completely original characters (like Cappy, Luma, the paper fairy character) but not any based on already established designs (Goombette, Broshi or Yoshi kid). Sounds dumb as fuck but there's no reason why they couldn't have made another Vivian type character.

I was on the fence about giving the new game a shot, but that tipped me into the firm no category. It's just a damn joke at this point.

I just don't understand why the same company allows Pokemon to basically be the exact same game over and over also decides that Paper Mario simply can't stick to such a good formula.

I feel like it had to have been some sort of corporate style guide decision over the last decade. Like, they want to unify the Mario universe as this hyper controlled, really generic creation.

I was mostly in agreement until that third paragraph. It is best to keep things simple for Mario games, but what kind of logic is that?

That's not even the case with some of the other ones despite the already large cast of characters. Do they just want the mainline, Nintendo EPD-developed games to have original characters now?

For some reason I dont think this will. This looks very similar to Color Splash but the fan reaction to it is shockingly different.

I really don't see how that could possibly be a rule for Paper Mario but not for anything else.

OF COURSE we loved Paper Mario! First two especially, with SPM being more divisive but with the best story out of them all. Why in the hell would you think we didn't love it??

That certainly seems like it since even the Mario & Luigi series fell victim to this. Most notable change was existing enemy/character designs in the Superstar Saga remake being changed to homogenized versions.

The first two are legit some of the best RPGs made by Nintendo. They've basically tried something new and different from the formula in every subsequent game, and most of the new ideas and innovations have been mostly considered repetitive, annoying, or lazy.

The first two Paper Marios are my favorite games of all time.
