yep. it is a derogatory term that means "eater of raw meat". Their official term is the Inuit people.

unsure since The Blackhawk tribe gave them permission to use the name and the logo isnt a cartoon character

Kind of surprised more people didn't know about the word eskimo being a term used to offensively call the Inuit people "eaters of raw meat". I thought it was common knowledge.

I dont think most people in the US could even tell you what an eskimo is other than they live in igloos, let alone that its derogatory.

ita sort of like gypsie where the fictional archetype sort of took over in the public conscious. Unless you live in an area with Romani people then most people will probably just think about Esmerelda from that Disney movie. >_>

though for what its worth, according to wikipedia, not all people who Eskimo would apply to fall under the term Inuit

That's what people thought it meant when they called them that. Apparently it's actually a French word esquimaux that means "one who nets snowshoes".

Ok, yeah, I mean I don't know much about the Inuit people, I just remember learning about the word eskimo and what it really meant. Maybe as a kid it was in one of our textbooks or we went to a museum that talked about it, but it sticks out to me as something I learned and didn't seem too obscure to me.

Inuit is one group that Eskimo covers. Inuit, Iupiat, Yupik, Aleut are all Eskimo. No one uses the term with any sense of derogatory connotation. It's more aken to calling a scottish person English because it's all the UK.

Not meaning it to be offensive doesn't stop it from being offensive. Jew is still offensive, as is Gyp, Redskins, and Eskimo.
