I used Turbo Tax the last few years but I pay over $100 on filing to do it because I need all the special documents for writing off my mortgage, student loan interest, etc. Those special documents are not available on the free version of Turbo Tax.

Turns out Turbo Tax is a scam. The IRS literally said its supposed to be free. So I must have used the wrong website. Does anyone here from experience know the correct one and can you list it please.

Thank you for the link. So it says that its only free if you make below $70,000... So it looks like Im always going to have to pay to file the damn thing. Might as well keep using Turbo tax. I wonder what TaxAct charges if youre over 70k

Wife and I always use Taxslayer. They charge to file state taxes tho, don't know if that's regular but I live in WA so I don't have to file state taxes.

I mean a lot of sites let you do it for free but then when you start getting into more advanced tax situations they're going to charge you for that because it's more complex than standard filing.

You might check out credit karma's service. I am gonna try it out next year myself. Been a TurboTaxer since I started filing taxes over ten years ago though so I'm just used to it.

This is what I think is happening. No matter where you file, it will cost you. Its only free for children because teens arent itemizing anything like interest line, mortgages, donations, investments, insurance accounts HSAs, etc. I guess if youre not working at Jewel, youre gna pay to file lol.

Unless I'm not reading something right, it looks like those only offer 100% free service if you're below certain income levels or are older than a certain age.

Yeah, the law says if you make over 69K you're out of luck. There's some exceptions, but yeah you're not getting the easy options for free most likely.

I've used this site for my filing the last two years. It is completely free and administered by the IRS. It allows you to fill everything out and electronically file. Some free sites have income limitations but this one doesn't

I use it.

Really only to check what they think my score is though. Dont use any of the services they have. Feel like their FICO score is accurate because I have free Experian through USAA and the scores are fairly similar.

Define barebones? It doesn't hold your hand through filling it out but i had a very complicated filing last year and was able to very easily add all of the forms I needed

Oh I mean for tax returns; I use it for my credit score all the time.
