From that poll, Mega Man had by far the best showing on the NES.

I can understand SMB too though.

I actually think old RPGs have aged a lot better than most genres.

Like, maybe SMB3 and Mega Man 2 have aged better than FF but try anything other than the very most popular games and see just how poorly the majority of NES games have aged.

The game is a product of its time, but even then, I'd say it was ahead of its time. I still consider it a good game, though I prefer playing the Dawn of Souls version on GBA. FFO on PS1 as both the quality of life balances and the original magic system integrated into it, if you want one version that has both ways of playing.

I'd argue that the Mega Man games, outside of 1, are quite easy compared to other NES games. No true game overs, and they're challenging in a good way.

Also some of the best music on the NES hands down. Between Mega Man, Little Nemo, and Duck Tails, Capcom made some of the best aging NES game IMO.

Because they kind of are. They're kind of like level packs with new weapons and music. They're supposed to be. It's kind of the opposite philosophy of something like Mario, where every game is supposed to be a totally new experience (with exceptions).

Presumably, this is why they made a spinoff after a couple of the originals. The spinoffs tend to change stuff up a bit.

For another Mario comparison, the series is kind of like what if every major Mario game had multiple Lost Levels entries, with the main entries being Mega Man, Mega Man X, Mega Man Zero, Mega Man ZX, Mega Man Legends, Mega Man Battle Network and Mega Man Star Force.

I always found them challenging as well but many of my friends before save states and the collector compilation never beat any MM due to difficulty and couldnt even beat more than a boss.

i think MM was the perfect balance of difficulty and fun.

FF1 isn't that good. You select 4 husks of people into one of six classes and then go and save the world.

Save points are few; dying at a boss means upwards of an hour lost.

Classes are imba; black mage, black belt, and thief are all generally worse than fighter, red mage, and white mage.

The last 1/3 of the game is mostly just you invoking weapons that cast medium-level black mage to aoe down whatever you're going up against. During boss fights your red/black mage is there to buff your physical fighters.

You're better off playing any of Wizardry 1, Ultima 4, Dragon Warrior 3, or Crystalis.

Every subsequent re-release of FF1 is good, but the original on NES has aged like hot garbage. The difficulty imbalance requires most people to grind - like many early RPGs - but also, several spells are bugged and don't work, and the shortened names of equipment and spells is too vague. Also, if you kill an enemy, and other characters are targeting it, they just attack the empty spot instead of moving onto another target.

There's some innovative stuff in it (that's honestly done much better and more polished in Dragon Quest games), but the later remakes made so many QOL improvements.

Never played the original NES version, but the ports and remakes and whatnot I've played have been pretty great. I think the first time I played it was the PS1 version. I kind of resent more recent versions where they've revamped the magic system. It was great and there was no reason to change it other than because it was different, in which case they should officially apologize for FF8.

@spikethedevil

If it possibly makes things any simpler for you, there are mobile ports of the PSP version on iOS and Android. Ive played the iOS version and it works fine. Although from what Ive read, the Android version does not include the additional post-game dungeons that were added to the PSP game (iOS does include it).

The first Final Fantasy is still the best turn based RPG on the system. Funnily enough, the latter-day remakes of Dragon Quest III have made it the vastly superior game, while later remakes of FF1 utterly bowdlerize the experience (even if they do make it more playable).

The class design is great, IMO. You have Thief who is supposed to be the "run away" character (a really powerful tactic in that game) but ends up giving you a hardmode, Black Mage is another hardmode with a nuke button, and Black Belt starts off slightly weak and ends up a powerhouse. Picking your playstyle is part of the fun.

Ports of the game are much more accessible to a modern audience, but they kill almost all the difficulty. FF1 is pretty well balanced, especially for its time period. Give it a shot and use some guides to read up on which spells actually work, or try a bug-fix patch.

Thief sucked but ninja is worth it. Since black magic sucks in that game Ninja gets access to all the spells that don't suck and you never need a Black mage.

Of course you can do the same thing with Red mage as well though red mage does less damage than ninja.

Black belt is the highest damage in the game why are people saying it's bad?

At the time, Final Fantasy 1, and Dragon Quest and the other NES Final Fantasys were really a head of their time. Nowadays, if you are a fan of that old school style of RPG, they are still great. Especially for Challenge and Randomizer runs. Of course the newer remakes of those games are usually better. I dont think its an exaggeration to say that we wouldnt have RPGs like we have today if not for Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest.

I wouldnt say that black magic sucks... its more limited due to the issue of having stocks per magic level. But early in the game, its fantastic when used appropriately.

Agreed. Late game critical hits can be doing 1,000+ damage. And since you dont need weapons, it saves extra weapon slots to hold items that have magical properties.

Well part of the reason FF and DQ exist is because those RPGS (mostly Ultima and Wizardry) were so stupidly popular in Japan but weren't a good fit for consoles so FF and DQ are themselves just taking the PC RPGs that were already there and dumbing them down to a controller with 2 buttons.

DQ took mostly from Ultima while FF took from Wizardry.
