Zelda actually beat FF last time they did this poll, though the change is more due to Zelda falling than FF rising. Super Mario and DQ have been the main beneficiaries of the lost Zelda votes.

Zelda barely won the last poll, and that was right after the release of Breath of the Wild. More distance from that game + FFVII Remake turning the tide doesn't seem implausible.

Looks like FFVII Remake is generally liked though! I guess the people complaining about how the plot veers off in a different direction from the original game are a VERY vocal minority?

DQXI wasn't even out in the West when we last held this poll. If anything, I'm rather underwhelmed by DQ's improvement here after DQXI played such a major role in popularizing its series to people who previously never gave it a chance.

Mario's the only shift that seems notable to me here, because there's no obvious explanation for it. Even then, though, FF is still utterly clowning on Mario. Yes, I know Zelda's SFF is brutal, and all the LFF doesn't help Mario either, but I have to assume that a hypothetical Mario/FF series contest match next year is no sure win for the former.

Its a lot closer now.

So many new series have come and old series have had their fortunes changed that we absolutely do need a new series contest! If anything the first one was probably too soon. Its been two generations since then, and one of those generations was defined by the loss of old series and the rise of new ones.

Yeah, despite Leon's protests, a series contest will likely happen sooner than later. However, we'll likely see a 64 entrant bracket so a lot of fodder will still make the bracket.

My vote was out of nostalgia rather than any recent game release. SMB3 and SMW were probably the finest platformers I've ever played, and they still rank as some of the best games I've played, period. I thought about the other series, and nothing else comes close to those two.

...But a series contest would be better anyway.

Series was the most boring contest we've ever had but I guess after 15 years people tend to forget that

everything that isn't FF, Zelda, Smash, or Mario gets tripled by those four and that's if they're lucky
