^ backstory.

i got it to a vet and got the wound cleaned. they also gave me lice sray but he's still full of lice, so i can't keep it inside yet. right now he's in a box on my porch, i pick the coolest place and

he's about 8 weeks old, and live near i work. sometimes i feed it with leftovers. today i found it wounded after getting ran over by a motorcycle. notjing was broken so it just need constant cleaning and balm.

i bought kitten feed too, so yeah. otherwise i am really nervous. how do you tame strays? i heard the louse will take around 3 weeks to disappear.

ce pls

  1. it's stray, but not really feral as in he's quite behaved and not afraid of humans. i can touch him without him complaining and used to humans in general. this is a good thing right?
  2. how can i get it used to the new environment? right now the box is on my porch and i pick the coolest area covered from direct sun and rain 24/7. i at least want him to safely feel the porch is his home before he's clean and i can take him inside.
  3. the mother is around. i feel bad separating him from her and his brother, but as much as i want, it isn't financially viable to take care of 3 cats especially 3 strays, so i take the wounded one only. i dunno, just feel guilty but he probably won't survive if i let him free again.

Is there any kind of animal control, or shelter near you that takes in strays? It sounds like it would be best turning this kitten over to a place like this for the time being. I don't know what country you live in, and it's very different in different nations.

there are a few people that might be able to help. @InfinityMonster took in a severely wounded kitten several months ago iirc and it was recovering well last I saw, and there was another user who took in a malnourished stray at work and things were looking up as of the last update, though I can't remember the username.

Do you have other pets? If not, the lice is likely not transferable to humans. Take it in, keep it in your bathroom or your tub. Provide clean water and food, and continue treating. Provide it clean towels and monitor it. It doesn't sound safe, as you said it was injured by a motorcycle when you kept it in a box.

If these means aren't something you can do, maybe it's best to leave it with the mother and hope that nature runs it's course. You can't save every animal, as much as your heart tells you that you should.

taking in a stray is fine, especially if its a kitten and already has a good disposition. It will grow to love you for rescuing it. Some of the best pets ive ever had have been stray.

Im gonna assume you live alone then. The only two things off the top of my head you might need to worry about is training it to use kitty litter so it doesnt pee or poo in your house while you are gone, and making sure he doesnt scratch something he isnt supposed to like carpet or a wall.

Took in a stray cat last summer that turned out to be pregnant and I kept her and one of the babies while finding homes for the other 3 kittens.

Never had a cat in my life and I was nervous as hell but it was actually super easy. The only training I had to do was literbox training and all that involves is just putting the kittens in the literbox when it looks like they are about to do the business in a corner somewhere.

now he's being a spoiled baby and cry whenever i left the room.

i have to go to work so the best bet i heard is to lock him in a safe room (bathroom is the only one in my house that's closed and don't have crawlspace. i closed the toiled lid so he don't drown and put a brick on the drain so he don't fall)

yeah he's at the age where he can live without mother's milk.

now the problem is he cry when i am not in sight. when i work, i basically just turned the bathroom into safe kitty room. i put a makeshift bed with a box and old clothes, put some plushy and makeshift toy by trying a keyychain on a rope and hang it on the clotheshanger within kitten's reach.

but he's like SUPER LOUD. he bascially monopolize all the decibels in the house. does this behavior goes away?

There won't be much training for a litter box, oddly enough cats just understand that's where they go. Don't keep him in a bucket, lol. I'm trying to get cultural differences here. Let him heal, chicken, pork, beef, fish is fine for a cat. If he eats it, let him eat all he wants. It will help him heal. Enjoy your new friend.

I didn't read anything in this thread but I did have a friend who took in a stray and just wanna give my anecdote. Found it by its apartment and it was always there so he felt bad for it. He took it to the vet one time just to make sure it was alright and then when he paid the bill it was pretty outrageous so he called me that day and he was like "I guess I just bought a cat because after this vet bill I can't just throw it back in the street"

Was legit the worst cat I've ever met. It had no chill. It would actively seek you out to claw you even when me and him were just on his couch playing VGs. It would run around his apartment knocking over anything it could, it would just go on these rampages.

That's not to say that the stray you've found will be like that but seeing my friend go through that trying to help strays definitely soured me on doing anything similar in the future.

the box was really super temporary shelter as i don't have time yesterday. it was honestly miserable and i felt bad. the safe room aka my bathroom is a lot spacious. i put my old clothes on a corner, water and food.

i can't litter box train him yet because vet said the sand might get into the wound and cause problem. at least wait till it closes. i take him out to the porch every morning and he usually do it in a corner, which is easy to clean. he's free to do it in the bathroom too.

i still feel kinda bad since i am separating it from its mom. i can't take care of 2 cats. i wish i could, but i can't :(

his wound would absolutely get bad infection without treatment. the bone's fine, but the skin on the paw is almost peeled off. the vet said it will be fine as long as i keep it clean. she got me disinfectant spray and a balm i must apply twice a day.

Reading the story, it's also pretty young. My friend's cat was already a few years old and a grown adult that was probably set in its ways. So yeah you probably are kind of lucky in that regard that it's still young.

yeah. my mistake is keeping him in a box on the first night. i put it inside, but he has no place to safely pee/poo so by morning i found him shivering on a sliver of clean corner. probably smelled really bad too :(

i should've researched more but it was an emergency and i didn't expect to bring home a kitten that day.

Typing this message while playing with my 8+ weeks old kitten. Took her in 5 weeks ago. I live in a place in India where stray cats are abundant. So, with an adopted stray dog already at home, I was skeptical about getting a cat, knowing the impending challenges. Moreover, I even lost my job a week ago so, me and my wife would not easily scrape through, considering lack of any unemployment benefits.

Despite all of this, getting the kitty was probably a divine intervention, as I would have otherwise probably just passed by her without taking her in. Her presence has lit up our home and our dog has also got a younger sister. Moreover, it's absolutely no fuss to take care of a cat compared to a dog. Kudos to you for rescuing your kitten, mate :-) Enjoy the time with him, he will naturally learn how to use the litter too. You are gonna love the cuddles!

The clingyness is a problem, especially that i can't be with him 24/7.

i make time for daily cuddles but he sleeps in different room. First that he can't be potty trained yet. I dont want to wake up with piece of poo below the bed. Second is he is very clingy and always want to beside me. He could approach when i am sleeping and i turned over accidentally hurt him .)

Seeing what works best with any one cat is about getting to know their personality. A few helpful (?) tips:

- Cats are nocturnal. Also, how social they are seems to be inversely related to how much of a hunter they are.
- Cats, like most animals, are habitual--to change a habit, an acceptable [to them] alternative must be provided.
- Look for a litter-training guide (for example...): https://catvills.com/5-easy-tips-litter-train-cat/

P.S.: Hairballs are a thing. Cats are more likely to barf in the open than pee/poop in hiding. Don't take it personally.
