Makes you wonder how South Korea did what they did. You look elsewhere and it looks like you need to go through the shit no matter what, but they seemed to have prevented the level most everyone else faced.

I've been wondering if states in the north east that are now doing ok are doing so just because they had the worst of it first and not because they are handling it better. Maybe it's more random than we think, you just need to keep your head above water until it settles back down?

South Korea hit the ground running with testing. They also did a heavy amount of contact tracing that probably wouldn't fly in this country. And wearing masks in public is already culturally accepted there, so that helped a lot.

i'm in nyc right now and the reopening is pretty measured. No bars; outdoor seating only for restaurants; still no theaters. Many streets have been closed to traffic so that restaurants can set up outdoor seating and people can social distance in the streets. Also, NY made masks mandatory back in April, and that restriction is here to stay. Most states reopened with little to no plan, and while the northeast has a plan, I still think it isn't strict or well-thought-out enough.

From the people I've talked to in CA and other states where it's spiking, their reopenings have been much closer to precovid than NYC.

You don't have to be a Democrat to have a good covid response (e.g. Mike DeWine, whose far-right legislature now thinks he's betrayed them for having a good covid response) and you don't have to be a Republican to have a bad response (e.g. Gavin Newsom).
