They were purchased at an awkward time where a lot of talent were leaving, morale was low, and at the time, MS was desperate for a developer that could push exclusive family-friendly content. One fun fact that always amuses me is how someone from Microsoft visited Rare's HQ and saw a statue of Donkey Kong, and they thought that they were getting the right to DK as well.

I remember how people thought this would be a HUGE asset to MS, and I think they paid about half a billion dollars for Rare, but then almost every Rare game after that was just a lukewarm success. I can't think of any games I loved after the buyout. Perfect Dark was incredible, and that was about a year before the buyout. Final amazing game.

But yeah, Microsoft had a typical manager and meeting-driven form of doing things, which was diametrically opposed to Rare's admittedly unusual approach, and that destroyed Rare. Really sad.

That's just revisionism. Rare has done plenty of average games every now and then, especially on the NES. Remember the WIzards & Warriors games?

The Stamper Bros wanted to retire, and Nintendo recognized it as a harbinger of doom.

Meanwhile, Nintendo has been running Camelot into the ground making pretty much nothing but Mario sports games, in much the same way Microsoft ran Rare into the ground making pretty much nothing but Kinect sports games.
