State universities that have great sports teams are almost always going to cost more than a state university you've never heard of. Also if someone lives in State A and wants to go to State B University, they'll have to pay A LOT more in tuition unless they're getting a scholarship (usually for sports) Private universities are not tax-funded which is why the tuition costs so much. They are funded by donors.
