Students should probably do something else for a year. But then again there's nothing to do because of corona.

University/college students dont just pay 'tuition'

Not sure how it works in the USA, but I work for a post-secondary institution here in Canada and we havent changed tuition fees either, because students are still getting the credential. What is being lowered/waived are the various ancillary fees (that go towards fitness centres, student government, etc) and I'm guessing that's the same for a place like Harvard?

Judging from social media sounds like going to harvard is actually closer to 80k a year with the other fees. They still paying for room and board.

Idk how it works at Harvard, but at UT Austin all those things are part of tuition.

One of the big lessons of this apocalypse is that you don't really have to be in a specific location at a specific time to do things that don't actually require being done in an specific place at a specific time.

It's also likely to be the first lesson forgotten, rather quickly.

Is that like a normal price for American school tuition? because that's more than my entire undergraduate in Canada. That's not even including other costs like room/board.

Normal for elite private universities. Assuming that's per year and not per semester, it's not too far from out of state tuition at higher ranked state universities.

In America there's a difference between community colleges, state universities, and private universities like Harvard

Community colleges are local to a county usually and are the cheapest of the three, but they only give two year degrees

State universities are regular 4 year universities, and they differ in cost by state. State universities that have great sports teams are almost always going to cost more than a state university you've never heard of. Also if someone lives in State A and wants to go to State B University, they'll have to pay A LOT more in tuition unless they're getting a scholarship (usually for sports)

Private universities are not tax-funded which is why the tuition costs so much. They are funded by donors. However, they usually give scholarships to everyone to offset the cost, so very few people pay the full tuition cost (although private schools still almost always cost more than state universities)

The vast majority of pharmaceuticals are either generic, have numerous cheaper alternatives or not even necessary.

You basically are required to be college educated to have a reasonable shot at even the most entry level careers.

on one hand, 50k for online courses is price gouging of the highest degree

on the other hand, if the degree is indistinguishable from an "in person" harvard degree, then it is a harvard degree after all

If you want to go to any college with any sort of weight you're looking to be indebted for the better part of a decade when you graduate.

I live in a third world country, my university is either within the top 100 worldwide or the 103rd best (little unclear on that) and it's essentially free.

A) This is patently untrue. Grants, scholarships, and even then state universities are very affordable. Not sure what you consider "weight." Harvard is FAR from the norm of US universities.
B) You're not even from the US yet you're trying to talk with any authority about its higher education system? And yeah, great, I think uni here should be free too.
