Fortunately, sir and ma'am are on their way out and have been for a while, even here in Dixieland. These days you're pretty much insulting people by saying it. They think you're calling them old.

Which is an insult I don't get. Old people are the best. But anyway.

Call them sir right back. Treat them even more respectfully. Get on a first name basis even if its a stranger, even if its just for them in reference to you.

Southern manners is one of the most positive aspects of Southern culture, so dont get that upset over it.

The first time I was called Sir, I was 14 years old. It seemed odd, but I realized the store employee was just trying to be polite and, yeah, was probably trained to do it.

I dont live in the US, so Im not sure if segregation is automatically the explanation in your case.

More often than not I hear it from Black folks, and it bothers me. It makes me feel like the type that would call them "boy" - and I grew up in areas where I saw it happen. Often.

Don't call me sir, especially if you're older than me. Mr. [redacted] is my father. And I'm only Andrew to my parents and the IRS.

Don't hit me with an honorific if our relationship is as equals.

I had this mentally handicapped customer at the grocery store and his parents have engrained in him to call employees sir and maam especially when asking for help. And like at first it made me uncomfortable so I always gave him a dude back to try to bring it down, but it was always thank you, sir at the end. Eventually instead of trying to bring him down to how I talk, I started calling him sir right back. He looked proud of himself, like not only that he earned my respect but that my respect was worth earning. What a good customer.
Very cool story. Good job.

"Excuse me" works pretty well for getting their attention, and otherwise I just leave off the address.

"Thank you sir" -> "Thank you"

Though I do indulge in a few phrases I always tack on "sir"/"ma'am" to just because they're references stuff and it wouldn't work if I dropped the address. I mean, they're pretty odd references that really sound like they could come from anywhere but I've been using them for like 15-20 years so I just keep on.

Good day, sir.
Thank you, sir.
You have a point, sir.

These days you're pretty much insulting people by saying it. They think you're calling them old.
I met a retail clerk who held open the door to his store for me. As I went in I said "Thank you, sir!" With an eye-roll and a sigh, he said "Call me 'a-hole,' but don't call me 'sir.'" :|
.

The23rdMagus posted...

I also met a medical student completing his residency. I called him 'Dr.' (close enough; he called me 'Mr.'). He said "No, just call me 'J.'", so I said "To be fair, you call me 'G.'"
.

I said these things with sincerity. Are all such salutations suspect (of being sarcastic, etc.), now?

In the US? Yeah, maybe.

If youre in Japan or Korea, Im pretty sure youll eventually end up on the shit list if youre not using honorific titles. When Im in the Philippines, I hear the word po or Manong at the end of every sentence for politeness, except when theyre saying Sir, which is still somewhat common.
