Slower metabolism + unhealthy habits. Some people can do nothing but eat junk all day and look underweight. Some can try to exercise and eat healthy and barely lose weight

Here's my armchair psychologist take on it

  1. Most people have a self image of themselves that allows them a certain degree of wiggle room in how to behave. I weigh 170lbs as an example, and my behaviour and habits will only drastically change if I creep 15lbs outside of that range either side. If I start to hit 180, then all my eating and physical fitness changes. it's quite frustrating for me actually because I don't seem to have the motivation to improve physically as long as I don't feel very bad about my self image.
  2. However, that assumes I know how to correct the problem. A lot of people don't. They're either misinformed or ignorant. They tend to overestimate the importance of a smal session of physical activity (e.g. a 30 minute run) and underestimate the damage of a "small" victory snack. And so their corrective behaviour doesn't do enough. So they can't get back into that self image perfectly
  3. Metabolism might be a small factor, but it's probably more about personal habits and physical activity.
  4. With enough time, that self image changes. So at age 20 it's 170, at age 25 it's 175, and so on. Impercetible changes over a long period of time that add up to a lot more
  5. Most people also have a reflex that tells them when they've eaten too much or not enough. Some people don't seem to have that, or theirs is broken, or they can just ignore it. Maybe they're just hungry all the time and never feeel full.
  6. Personality disorders, such as dysmorphia, self harm, etc.
  7. Combine all of these things and you get a boogie.

When the body becomes totally out of balance. Cells are depleted and deprived of nutrients due to an inadequate diet of large amounts of empty calorie, high carb processed foods. Hormones like insulin, ghrelin, leptin, and estrogen are not working correctly and run rampant. Lack of exercise fails to stimulate the muscles of the body, as lean muscle is what stimulates metabolism because muscle requires MUCH more energy to maintain than it takes to store fat.

It's not as cut and dry as "eat less, move more" because of the complexities I listed. Eating 500 calories less every day may help, but if you're still eating the same general foods, you will hit a wall and be unable to push though. Cardio will help burn some fat, but building muscle is what will start greatly enhancing your metabolic drive and make it easier to lose weight.

Generally the more you weigh, the higher your metabolism.

But many could have thyroid problems.
Perhaps their appetite hormone (grenaline) is disrupted and they don't feel as full as fast.

Besides that, lifestyle choices.. perhaps parents didn't bring up healthy eating too

It's because they take the easy way out of most things by maximizing pleasure and not prioritizing discipline. I was 275lbs last year, and I got that way because I had absolutely no discipline when it came to the basics. Things like exercise, ordered and proportioned eating, even proper hygiene. If you work from home and make a reasonable wage and live with your folks it's super easy to keep racking up weight. I remember there were times I would eat beyond being full, I would eat every hour or 30 minutes, even if it was just one snack it was very calorie dense stuff with low nutrients, imagine eating a snickers every 30 minutes + 3 big meals a day + drinking pop with all the meals and drinking pop throughout the day. You can easily finish a 2 liter of pop by yourself in one day eating like this, that has to be like 1500 all from carbs, then each meal is at least 500 calories, so another 1500 calories, a snickers has 250 calories if you eat just 4 of them that's 1000 calories, so you're looking at 4000 calories per day maybe even more, mostly from carb dense foods high in sugar. People who get this big have the diet of a pro athlete but the lifestyle of a sloth.

I was 6'1 and got up to my highest of 300lbs few months ago.
Im not a full on round fat person imo. People dont expect it when i say how much weight i am.

But yeah i have a big appetite. And when im hungry i liked to eat till i was disgustingly full. And then i would eat snacks or whatever when i wasnt hungry just cuz. Love sweet stuff too. Also a stretch where i didnt work out or exercise that much.

Been working out and cutting calories again and down to 270. 70 more pounds till me goal.
