I was a wizard at these games on the PS2, but I skipped everything since because I didn't have any way to play 6 and I didn't like the AH demo at all. So naturally I'm stoked for this one. First to finally play a new one of these, second to see if I still got it.

For whatever reason, it doesn't seem to recognize my controller (Wii Classic w/a Mayflash adaptor; I use it to keep the face buttons where I'm used to them) so I'm going M+K, which is an adjustment but it seems to work pretty well. Worst case, I break down and buy a modern 360/One style controller. Would have FF and accelerometers and stuff anyway.

Alright so the game itself. Feels a LOT like 04, in a lot of ways. First, there's the interaction of two separate stories--the pilot you play as and the narrator who sees the war from a different perspective. This time, though, they really improved the cutscenes from the 04 slideshow to legit cinematics, which is always nice. The narrator'a VA is kinda bland so far but her struggle is oddly relatable so that'a cool.

Another reason it feels like 04 to me is the more arcadey style to the gameplay flow--you get the mission prep phase, the combat phase and the results phase just like in the old days. But now the interface is sick as hell. HD baby. Combat interface appeara to have been lifted from the old games directly, though, lol.

Loving the new weather effects, like how when you go into the clouds it screws up your targeting systems. Was a really nice touch amd actually adds a decent challenge when enemies try to escape your lockon by retreating into the clouds.

Just played the first two missions, and so far I really like it. Stay tuned.

yeah, it's not quite as great as the ps2 triology, but it's still a lot of fun.

I loved AC7.

The closest they have gotten to the PS2 era since.

The music, while good, didn't feel the same for me. The soundtrack isn't memorable to me yet.

I was annoyed by the first level with the drone enemies zooming around back and forth and the level being too bright and cloudy which made the hud and lock on targets difficult to see. I think Im halfway through the campaign and really loving it so far.

Oh man that mission at the space elevator (first one if there's more than one) was like YES. Stuff like that is what makes this a great series. You think, how much variety can a combat flight sim really have, when all the sudden WILD STEALTH MISSION APPEARED. Not to mention the nice ground target phase and air target phase.

This is BS though, I didn't shoot down the president.

Kinda funny that they let me keep my planes in the following mission, lol.

Anyway, what was the deal with my plane pulling off course on its own on the space elevator mission? Is that a wind thing?

This game is great.

Sadly the ps4 is a dick and only works with a specific joystick that i'm not going to buy for one game and has less buttons then my current t-16000m. So i was stuck using a controller. Which is fine...just, not as fun as a flight stick.

Yeah, it feels so much better since I got my controller to work lol. Hadn't even considered a flight stick. *contemplates*

It's probably ok for a M+KB guru but I kept finding myself trying to yaw and ending up rolling, or trying to change targets and hitting caps lock/~ instead of tab. Or having a yard time pitching without rolling and vice-verse. I found it easier to use more of a QWES finger placement than a WASD one since that gives you accel/decel/yaw instead of accel/decel/roll, and you can roll with the mouse anyway.

i bought my joystick and throttle like 5 years ago when star citizen squardron 42 was supposed to be coming out Soon still not even the sniff of a release date because they make more money selling concept art

Got to use it a little with MW5 and should get to use it was star wars squadrons in October.

Well, it took some more tries but I got through that one. Used rockets and switched to the high speed missile on reload. Got 22k points. This is hard mode, of course, id it makes any difference. B rank. These terrain-intensive annihilation missions always were some of the toughest.

I feel like with more practice, the rockets are probably an incredible tactic for getting a lot of damage done quickly. They fire in bursts, they have great capacity for how much hell they can raise, and if you do it right, you can wipe out multiple targets in the process of reorienting yourself to the next group. But that'll take some practice. Plus, there's probably a multiple guided bomb you can unlock later that has also always been super effective in these games.

I looked up the model number and reviews are fantastic. And not especially expensive.

Of course the other problem is my desk is cluttered enough already. :P

Man there was so much to do in 4, and yep, I did it all. All S Ranks on every difficulty, even those absurdly difficult extra missions like the one where you fly through the rings. Unlocked every hidden skin, too.

Not sure about F-15/A yet but stay tuned.

Awesome game but I wish it had team commands and acknowledgement like in AC5 since I prefer the game developing me from a flight rookie taking orders to eventually giving out my own. And also choosing my flightmates' sortie settings too should've been a thought.

Soundtrack is phenomenal and I enjoy it but there's something missing from it reaching franchise-best and that's probably it imo.

Oh man mission 7 is my new second-favorite mission of the series, after the closing doors mission in 5.

I always liked ravine/canyon levels, then the lightning added a cool challenge for the dogfight, and there was even a boss to boot! Great level!

Hah, I stopped playing for a while on the mission where you have to stop the bombers from destroying the fake airbase.

Mind you I have never played the series and was trying to do it in the dlc original mig with gunpods...

Probably not the best decision, but I liked the maneuverability as it felt I had constant fucking missiles locked on me.

Intend to pick it back up after I clear some space from my hard drive.

Enemies in 7 are definitely more aggressive than in previous games. Ace difficulty is no longer instant death from missile hits but enemy planes are absolutely ruthless with their missile launches, especially the drones. The fact that the game had development issues starts to show later in the story though, there's plot threads that are completely dropped and there's a span of like three or four missions with zero cutscenes to indicate anything is happening with the rest of the war.

Man this mission with the overhead missile launcher and the clouds, I don't think there's any way to hit some of these things without getting shot.

Maybe that's the challenge. I guess I'll just focus on the actual targets for now and maybe a few more here and there.

Well I finished that one. Pretty cool mission.

The next mission is terrible. The worst. This is the one where you escort the commander and those SAMs for whatever reason can shoot him from across the whole dang map, which was bad enough, but then halfway through, you have to fight that unknown thing, which is evidently incapable of taking damage. I ask google, google says stay behind it. Ugh, I can't get behind it, that's the problem.

Yep, that's the one. I picked the fastest fighter I had and that helped a lot. But then I didn't have good mobility for the boss!

Alright so I dunno if it was just dumb luck or what but I got it on my first try today. The unknown just flew in a straight line and let me shoot it down with the HVAA missiles.

*shrugs*

Mission 10 is cool af. This is the one with the sea platforms. Lasers absolutely own this mission. So much easier to get them into the platform cores than normal missiles. It's another damage marathon though so I keep dying like ten minutes in. I eventually lose my patience and I'm like uh oh missile on my tail but hang on just let me get this shot in lol.

Hell yeah, that was my favorite game in the series and one of my favorite games on PS2.

Of course, I'm rather fond of this one so far too so depending on how the later levels are, it may yet be dethroned.

That was a frustrating mission on many levels, but destroying all that stuff with perfect flying was so satisfying. I wish more levels had that same level of annoyance/vindication in it. Never tried lasers, though.

Yep. Lasers are great for the platforms and they also make short work of the ships. Plus, you can pair them with the machine gun (and shoot both at once) for even more ownage.

I'm trying to remember if I did everything in that mission on one run or not. I kinda like missions that make you resupply halfway through because you spent all your ammo in hectic combat. Think was one like that early in AC4, a giant dogfight over some island.

I guess it's kinda cool story-wise but I have no idea how this will work in terms of gameplay. Unless it's just stationary the whole time, I guess.

Remember how in Ace Combat 04, one of the cannons was non-functional? That was damage from a Ulysses fragment impact, and so that single cannon survived the ISAF air raid and sat dormant for nearly 20 years.

Man that was a great mission. Kinda dumb of the Erusians to send exactly our target directly to us but eh, made for a great battle. Missiles were flying everywhere. O_O

Also a fan of the next two. The missile launches were intense af and that's probably my new favorite canyon in the series. I don't get why I ran out of time with 17 minutes left though. I guess there was something specific I was supposed to do and I just missed it?

Is that the one where the silos are disguised and you have to blow up the ICBMs before they leave the atmosphere? I don't remember liking that one too much, especially when you have to fly at 234342 MPH towards the launch, then pull straight up for your only chance to blow it up.

Yep. I just happened to be in the fastest fighter I had (with speed enhancements), so while ot was a nailbiter, I got it on my first try.

Yeah, the canyon mission rules. I was supposed to support the landing troops before, lol. Once I realized that, I S Ranked it first try!

The Farbanti mission was kind of a letdown in that the one from 4 was better. Totally called it on Wiseman dying but not on Count being his replacement. So that was kinda cool. Also, the story went in one heck of a direction after that. :O Also, when is Mr. X gonna fight me like a man already, I swear. He's all like "look at me I'm the biggest badass ever even though I keep running away with my tail between my legs!"

This game is so good, I swear.

And the dog in question was a real dog belonging to a team member. The dog has since passed away but has forever been immortalized as jpeg dog in the game and on the internet in general.

Yeah, I liked that one, too. I think my least fave was the one where you go out to the desert and 99% of the targets are ground enemies and planes that haven't taken off. It reminds me of some missions from AC4 and generally wasn't very enjoyable. It was the only one in the game like that, though, IIRC, so the uniqueness stuff does factor in.

Tht mission where you escort the car and the IFF is broken was tricky. But in a good way. Having to get in close to ID the ground targets was kinda crazy considering it was in a city. Especially with how long it takes; I kept stalling.

I eventually got through it by switching to the slowest plane I had, which as it turns out, has the four guided bomb weapon too, which was also pretty helpful.

Kind of ironic, really, to swap to a slower plane. I kept stalling anyway, and I just kept hearing Will Smith's voice in my head saying "We was breaking the slowness limit," lol.
