The blue flu struck 171 Atlanta cops in the days after criminal charges were brought against two white officers in the fatal shooting of a black man, Rayshard Brooks, according to a report.

WSB-TV found that the biggest sickout was June 19 when 90 officers called out sick. Half of those officers were assigned to the downtown area where most of the protests after the Brooks shooting were taking place.

The citys response, I recall early on, seems like they downplayed those numbers. The public should know thats a significant amount of police officers who did not come to work during that time period, retired Atlanta police Detective Vince Velasquez told the station in a report Thursday.

WSB found 171 officers called out sick between June 17- 20 after obtaining 52 pages of attendance records from the Atlanta Police Department.

The 27-year-old Brooks was fatally shot in the back by Officer Garrett Rolfe, 27, after Brooks fired a Taser in the officers direction. He had been running away after a struggle with Rolfe and another officer outside a Wendys fast-food restaurant on June 12.

The shooting happened against the backdrop of nationwide protests over the May 25 death of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis and prompted the resignation of Atlanta's top cop Erika Shields.

The sickout began soon after Rolfe and officer Devin Brosnan were arrested June 17 after an investigation by Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard into the shooting.

Rolfe is facing multiple charges including felony murder. Brosnan, 26, is facing an aggravated assault charge. Howard said Brosnan stood on Brooks shoulder as he struggled for his life. Brosnan is out on bail, while Rolfe was locked up without bail.

Lawyers for both men have said their clients actions were justified.

Velasquez told the station that the large sickout was not something he had seen in his career.

Some officers have flatly told me that theyre afraid to go to work and to answer a call and commit to a process and feel like theyre doing the right thing, feel like theyre doing their jobs, and then face not just disciplinary action, but prosecution, Velasquez said.

This is a unique case because some of the charges that were brought up with these officers were policy violations that were turned into oath-of-office crimes that were alleged by the DA, and some of these things are completely foreign to all of us, he said.

Interim Chief Rodney Bryant assured the department had sufficient staff to protect the city during the sickout.

They should be fired

Pretending to be sick because you're mad at being held accountable for your actions in a job you are paid to do is pathetic even before you get into the oath you violated.

These absolute cretins better not be getting the bonus that was given out to cops. That bonus was intended for the guys who even at the hardest of times did their jobs like pros, not the cowards who fuck the public over because they are insecure bullies.

This is actually a fair point. Remember how the cops were worried because people in the legal system were starting to believe Dawkins/XSquaders lies about being abused by the police? It wasn't until the body cam footage came out that proved Dawkins was a lunatic that all the cops breathed a sigh of relief. But what would have happened if the camera failed or got knocked off?

Imagine you're out there on the street knowing that you might be one camera failure away from a prison sentence if shit goes sideways. I can see why good cops would be scared to go out there too.

Sounds like the department is overfunded and the city is over policed if they can get by with that many cops missing

Please remember that while it is funny to refer to the police as pigs, pigs are, in fact, intelligent and sensitive creatures who are abused by meat Industries around the world. Police, by contrast, are stupid and vicious creatures who are pampered by industries around the world, at least until they've outlived their usefulness.

The DA really needs to recuse himself from this case. So much of it is going to hinge on the GBI investigation, and it wouldnt be right to have him acting as DA when he is also under investigation by the GBI.

Pretending to be sick when you're not is not "taking time off"

Even at the best of times, let alone a crisis.

And let alone when you took an oath

Not really.

"We can protect the city" means they can't go after small crimes.

In the UK for example, Police often only respond to about 50% of domestic abuse calls.

But when there was a terrorist attack they were on the scene and arrested the perp inside 5 minutes

You have to put this into context. A man started a fight with the police, disarmed one of them, and then pointed a weapon at them, at which point he was shot and killed. For shooting a person aiming a weapon at him, the officer was charged with felony murder, which carries the possibility of the death penalty.

If the cops can't shoot somebody who's pointing a weapon at them, exactly what are they supposed to do? Just let violent criminals go? Not get involved? If you think the police acted in the wrong by shooting an armed suspect pointing a weapon at them, shouldn't you be applauding the police staying home?

The dude got into a struggle with the officer, used a weapon against him and tried to run away. Why is this not justified use of force?

There are many options between "Do nothing" and "Shoot the guy in the back twice."

You're dishonest as hell.

Chase him, put in an arrest warrant and get him later, call for back up, use the other tazer. You know what would have happened in every other first world nation on Earth?

Second, you're saying "Pointed the weapon at them" when the taze had no charge and Rolfe knew it. He admitted he was in no danger when he shot a man in the back twice.

And that was a weapon Brooks got from the cops that he absoutely should not have been able to do but they were too incompetent.

There is no way to defend this, let alone pretending to be sick to sit at home and getting paid over it.

And no, you shouldn't applaud tax payer dollars going to lazy lying idiots sitting at home, they should be fired.

I want a good police force. Not cowards and murderers. It's insane that you would consider that a controversial stance that you struggle to understand.

Brooks was alive after being shot in the back twice while fleeing. He was then kicked on the ground by the officer that shot him while the other officer was on top of the bleeding man.
