Here Comes the Pain for me. Mind you I never bothered with No Mercy due to not bothering with a N64. Still to this day wrestling games are still trying to capture what No Mercy did. I doubt they ever will. Maybe AEW's new game will.

Well, I guess it really depends on the THQ-published games in question. The best were clearly the ones on the GC (which were dev'd by Yuke's, although Yuke's 2k series kinda sucks). Day of Reckoning had great pacing, a solid roster, and a decent character creation mode (plus iirc it didn't have a stamina mechanic, which kept matches faster paced). DoR2 was better in some regards, although that one I remember having a stamina mechanic which slowed the pacing.

The problem I have with a lot of later wrestling games is that they tend to be pretty slow paced, with the speed being absolute shit at times.

The N64 and ps1 games kinda looked like crap and I was never that into them. Then again, I had also taken a break from pro wrestling at the time so they had less appeal

The N64 THQ games were so good that I played them even after I stopped watching wrestling.

I always knew it was fake, I was never one of those people, but I enjoyed seeing them jump off the Titantron down 40ft and elbow some dude on the floor. Is it fake? Yeah. Was the fall real? Ooooh yeah.

The choreography of the matches were also amazing. I remember one with Shawn Michaels and Mankind. God damn! It was soooo good. These guys did amazing. Looked real, and lots of creative moves were done. At one point Mankind was thrown through the top and middle ropes, and ended up twisted and basically choked/hanging by the ropes.

But then The Rock came, and blew up. And all of a sudden they couldnt have the guy with 50 different catch phrases, all of which are printed on T-Shirts and merchandise that sell for MILLIONS, jumping off the cage and possibly hurting himself and then they lose that cash cow. So then wrestling went from 90% ring time and 10% backstage time to 90% backstage and 10% ring time.

R.I.P. Wrasslin.

Omg the first part of this and mentioning Mankind part reminded me of him talking about being thrown off the Hell in a Cell (might have been one of his other personas that did that though, little fuzzy there).

They weren't doing shit like that when I originally watched, but kayfabe was basically out of the bag in the 80s when the WWF/E started going national because the NY wrestling style was more comic wrestling and also there had been a *lot* of public shit exposing the business, including arch-enemies Hacksaw Jim Duggan & Iron Sheik getting busted smoking pot together while driving in the 80s.... actually, come to think of it, basically every fissure in the legitimacy of pro wrestling had something to do with the WWE, whether it was the Curtain Call, Brett Hart outright admitting everything was fake after the Montreal Screwjob (but almost everybody knew by then, except really young kids), etc. But believe it or not, once upon a time pro wrestlers tried to keep it a secret. If a face happened to run into a heel in public, they'd argue or brawl in front of a crowd.

Overlooking that both the Rock and Austin took some huge falls, jumping off cages wasn't the norm for most of wrestling's existence. That was more of a thing that started with promotions like ECW.

As for the Rock, Michaels, etc, they sometimes oversold the shit out of moves making matches look fake as hell. And Mankind/Cactus Jack was never much of a wrestler, he was more of a stuntman.
