Cases are spiking in several states and the solution for some is shutdown everything. Are we supposed to continue this for rest of year?

I was glad I was able to return to work this week but if things shut down I'm out of work again and government not paying my bills. I needed the money from this job.

This is exactly why we needed a federal stay at home order in early March. If the whole country had shut down at the same time, then we would be recovering at the same time.

Some states quarantined for two months from the start and others ignored it because they wanted to keep money flowing in. Now we have to have some states with temporary bans of travelers from other states, which is the only way to protect ourselves and prevent another state-wide shut down.

Some nations didn't do that and are/were fine. In Canada, there were no stay-at-home orders, only restrictions on businesses and gatherings, for example.

Definitely don't need to shutdown the less populated states. I was on a self-isolation vacation in the WV mountains and my neighbor up there looked at me like I was crazy when I asked him about the virus. He's like...virus? lol. They literally never closed anything up there and nobody is sick. Churches bars everything stayed open this whole time. I'm sure they closed things in the biggest WV cities but not in the countryside. I went into several grocery stores and I could not find a single person wearing a mask, even the workers. It's like a nothing ever happened.

We need to do one of two things:

Option 1: Close down entirely until a vaccine happens.

Option 2: Have everyone wear masks.

Seeing as option 2 can only be achieved by executing more people than would ever had died of Covid, option 1 it is.

It made me regret not saving up more money before this. Kinda realized government doesn't bail out regular people. We got to fend for ourselves. Just makes the forced unemployment so much worse knowing this. Hopefully we don't have another stay at home order.

this. "leaving it up to the states" is what fucked everything up. everyone should have shut down until it was contained. it's going down in NY cause we had an appropriate response, even if it was kind of late. and then you have dumbass governors who did it even later and their states are going to get fucked now

If the EU slowed the virus down by shutting everything down the whole time, then what's going to stop it from going back up as soon as they reopen? Nobody is going to have vaccines for a long time, and at this rate the U.S. will reach a herd immunity much quicker while having a stronger economy.

Maybe a slightly less indecisive narrative from the White House would have sufficed.

I know you think youre making a point, but the fact is that every state who ignored the quarantine had a governor who sucks up to Trump. If he had said to shut down and wear a mask, theyd have done it. This is really all there is to be said on the topic.

The virus only stays in your system for so long. The idea is to lock down long enough for people to recover from it, while creating a safe plan for reopening.

A lot of states didn't do that and instead rushed a reopening while new cases were on the upswing.

I've said this a million times before and I'm going to continue saying it, new cases don't mean dick. We cannot test everybody every week. Keeping the number of deaths and hospitalizations as low as possible is the only goal that matters.

Again, this graph doesn't matter.

This one does.

The fact that we're continuing to see a steady decline of fatal cases far from the peak while the number of cases is increasing at the same time should be VERY encouraging.

Regardless, I've already shown that fatalities are not tied to infections. Besides, people are going to die no matter what we do. No god president in the world could prevent people from dying. But if we can minimize them as much as possible while still having lives to live, I call that a win.
