I'm so fucking sick of this bull shit!
Why? Why in god's name does ANYONE think locking the top banner/menu/etc... to not vertically scroll (ie, go the fuck away) is good design? I want that 1/3 of my vertical screen space back, damn it! Stop giving me headaches just trying to use your website, straining my eyes. Vertical screen real estate is already at a premium as it is on a desktop or laptop. I see the left and right sides not even being used and everything getting crammed into a tiny vertical rectangle, WTF?! If there were different versions for desktop/laptop and mobile it'd be fine, but nooooooooo, can't have that! This is sociopathic.

(not about this website, thankfully it hasn't gone full stupid yet; just needed to vent cause I know companies don't give a shit about those of us who don't web browse on phones and nothing will ever improve)

It's horrible in general. Welcome to the fondleslab era.

I like to think historians will look back on this as the digital dark ages. Only not as fun as the real dark ages.

Is there some sort of official name for the policy/style?

Best I could find is "Responsive Web Design" (quite the Orwellian name, so kudos for that, despotic website designer overlords). But that still isn't yielding much in the way of google results for people complaining about or discussing this assault on our eyes that has been spreading like cancer for nearly a decade.

responsive web design.

it's supposed to let websites scale properly on all formats, of all resolutions and screen sizes, without having to have specific "mobile" versions of websites.

Oh, I see how it is.
All the years that PC was the majority, websites went and tried to make special .m versions of the sites to accommodate mobile users.
Now that mobile is in the majority, PC users can just go fuck themselves, eh?

Well, it doesn't seem to work too well. I want the two site solution back!

it's mobile-first design. responsive web design is an aspect of it, but the nature of responsive design means you're inevitably going to prioritize one over the other.
