Both states voting today, but a lot of people have already voted by mail, so it'll be hard to know results for sure tonight before all those get counted.

Stuff to watch
Kentucky Democratic Senate primary: Progressive Charles Booker is taking on Amy McGrath, a former fighter pilot who has spent $20 million and talked about how she wants to work along with Trump when in office. Polls have had McGrath losing despite having the backing of key national Democrats like Chuck Schumer.

https://twitter.com/JoshuaPotash/status/1275561993450250243

NY 16 Democratic House Primary: Eliot Engel, a 30 year incumbent who mostly lives in Maryland, is being challenged by Jamaal Bowman, a former middle school principal who has earned the support of AOC, Sanders, and Warren. Polls have had Bowman ahead.

NY 15 Democratic House Primary: Trump supporting Ruben Diaz Sr could actually win this owing to a crowded field of challengers in the bluest district in the country.

Heard Kentucky's primary is a fucking disaster. Glad they were able to extend times though.

Hope both Booker and Bowman win.

Man has some real trash foreign policy views, and was caught on microphone saying he wouldn't care about attending a recent rally if he didn't have a primary.

I feel like progressives are better off going after the Engel/Crowley types than trying to unseat Pelosi even though the latter is a "sexier" thing.

They did heavily push for mail-in ballots. Even so, it's weird that the 2 largest cities each have a single voting site.

EDIT: Cast my vote for Booker

I'm thinking more of national attention/fundraising. Like when Beto ate up a lot of funding in 2018 because people really wanted to see Cruz lose.

Though tbf, it might be more of a bias thing as someone who doesn't vote in either district that I'm conflating "who I hear about" with "who is getting more (important) attention".

I honestly don't hear anything about Shahid Buttar outside of a certain set, but Jamaal Bowman and Mondaire Jones got a lot of attention.
In terms of primarying, you throw some one at everyone you can, because you can never know who will stick.

Me, personally? I'm bearish on Kentucky. I worry Booker will be sunk by nebulous concerns about "electability" with people who think other people won't vote for a progressive black man and thus it would be better to vote for the garbage white woman.
I'm cautiously optimistic about Bowman though. Incumbents generally don't reach for the kitchen sink unless their internals are giving them bad news, and Engel has seemed increasingly desperate.

Before the CA primary I heard a lot more about him, especially weighted by his chances of winning the primary. Would you expect to hear about a primary opponent who gets 13% in any other district?

I know CA jungle primaries and stuff but.

I'm saying these establishment Democrats are very bad at politics and consistently back the wrong horse and lose winnable races. And that it makes no sense to have them in office making bad policy if they're not even going to make good purely political decisions.

They're not backing him because they think he'll win. They're backing him because he's the house chair of foreign affairs and you aren't going to get loyal party members if you back their primary opponents just because it looks like they'll lose.

Like you understand that endorsing isn't just "predicting who will win" right?

I mean if we're doing electoral analysis, the establishment wing of the party won congress 2 years ago.

While some notable progressives were elected in 2018, the House majority was not won because of them

That's all well and good during normal circumstances. But during a pandemic, and associated economic crisis, and uprisings for racial and social justice, it doesn't make as much sense. You gotta read the room.

This is true, but times were different back then. The forces driving that surge was impeachment/oversight of a President that would at least be in office 2 more years and residue of the Women's march etc. This is a time of anger and change. The focus is what they will do with a Democratic President and house, and possibly Senate, not just providing a check on Trump.
