Following President Donald Trump's admission during a campaign rally in Oklahoma over the weekend that he ordered administration officials to "slow the testing down" in response to the recent surge in Covid-19 cases, two leading Democratic senators on Sunday slammed the Health and Human Services Department for failing to spend $14 billion in funds Congress approved in April to expand coronavirus testing and tracing.

"He was clearly joking!"

Does he have a choice?

I mean I guess he could tell whoever he wants to appoint as AG that one of the conditions of their appointment is that they don't go after Trump, but that would open up a huge can of worms.

What the fuck does slowing down on testing do? I'm not someone who cries about every little thing Trump does, but not testing to the fullest of our capabilities doesn't help anyone, not even him. Yeah it artificially lowers the numbers, but not knowing who is and isn't infected and tracing everyone they come into contact with means we get even more infections which means more death. You can artificially lower the infection numbers, but dead bodies are dead bodies. Want to open the economy and trust the citizens to make the right choices? Fine, but you also need to give those same citizens the tools needed to protect themselves and their community.

Probably because people keep ragging on him for rising numbers, and one of the main reasons for that is we were massively undertesting before.

That's the 478th thing that would've ended any other presidency that Trump has committed...

Prosecution is always a choice. Obama's justice department chose not to touch all the crimes committed by the Bush administration (torture stuff, specifically), or really any of the fraud that led to the financial collapse.

For better or worse presidents will always be hesitant to prosecute former presidents because they are afraid of setting a precedent. Obama wouldn't go after Bush because he didn't necessarily know who would be after him and or how dirty his hands might be when his presidency was finished.

Biden is old enough that he'll probably be dead within the next 10 years so it's not like he'll have much to lose

Testing and getting confirmed cases is a big part of contract tracing, and important part of controlling the spread of disease

essentially if you can confirm as many cases as possible, you can determine where the infection is spreading better, and you can better selectively target the communities being affected

I thought the whole "Don't prosecute former Presidents" thing was supposed to be for shit like committing war crimes in the Middle East, not "This guy is stealing money from the government" or "This guy actively worked with a foreign government to help him get elected".
