C/D: It might be bad to destroy everything that has a history that is offensive to modern standards

This isn't a comment on any specific case, just the general question that always destroying things with an offensive history might be a bad idea.

That would require killing all of humanity. Possibly the destruction of Earth itself, so confirm.

The thing about things of historical significance is yes, there are monuments that glorify a past we would like to forget. The Confederacy lasted for five years, but its significance lasted for generations beyond that. I'd like it to turn into an actual teaching moment, and not just a billet of propaganda.

Yes.

The vast majority of characters and stories created prior to the Civil Rights Movement have unsavory histories. This includes (but is certainly not limited to) Bugs Bunny, Mickey Mouse, James Bond, King Kong, Tarzan, Batman, Superman, Zorro, The Lone Ranger, Popeye the Sailor, Felix the Cat, Peter Pan, Flash Gordon, and Shazam (original Captain Marvel).

Most American cities were built by slave labor and almost all of them on lands that had been confiscated from the indigenous peoples of the Americas. Also, let's not forget that space travel technology and assembly line technology both originated with people who had Nazi ties.

There's no way to cleanse the world of all bad history. Some things you throw away, some things you keep in spite of who brought it or how it was acquired. You can't just scorch the Earth and start anew.

But you can (and should) ditch a racist old mascot.

Give me an example

The question is not about any specific example. The question is literally about the statement itself.

Give me an example where it would be bad to destroy something that has an offensive history.

If you destroy something that has an offensive history, you also destroy something that has the ability to allow room for moral reflection; to give you the opportunity to learn from people's past mistakes through history, and use it as a learning tool to improve and create a better future.

The statement is:

"It might be bad to destroy everything that has a history that is offensive to modern standards"

If you believe there does not exist an example of something that qualifies which might be bad to destroy, then you can answer Deny.

The question is simply do you confirm or deny the presented statement.

What an incredibly weak statement.

What do you mean by that?

Using "might" and "everything" makes it incredibly broad. If there's even one thing with an offensive history that I'm not 100% sure should be destroyed, my answer should be "C".

So there are only weak conclusions you can draw from people saying C.

Just put it in museums.

They definitely shouldn't stand as monuments to government buildings or anything out in the public.

Nobody is saying otherwise.

So what is the problem?
