Is it sophisticated sounding to them? Dumb? Does a southern accent still sound dumb to them?

As an Australian (so therefore, the worst accent in the world), the Southern accent is infuriating. It just sounds dumb.

New York accent the GOAT.

Also nb4 some American is like "wE dOn'T hAvE aCcEnTs"

I did once read something that claimed the modern southern american accent is what british people sounded like around the time of the revolutionary war

You, I like you.

And yeah, it seems it's the New York accent that most places think of.

The second worst is female LA (think Kardashians)

When I travelled to America and stayed in Hollywood for a few nights, I remember asking the waitress for some recommendations of good bars, and I'll never forget her saying "Let me think for a quick hot minute" in that goddamn accent. Wanted to just get up and leave.

I always thought the Southern US accent sounded endearing to UK folks for some reason. Must've read that somewhere. Being from New York, it's hard to imagine any other country viewing the "new yawk" accent in a positive light, or that it's the most representative of people from the US. I'd guess that when most UK people think of an American accent, they think of the most neutral, non-regional accent that you hear from most national newspeople.

The accent that Londoners (not England as a whole) had back then was closer to modern day West Country, and was the accent that turned into Irish, American, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, South African and modern southern English accents. There's an entire reconstruction of it that's used for authentic Shakespeare plays.

Edit: Oh, and southern American accents sound terrible to me, personally. I had to use subtitles to understand No Country For Old Men. It sounded like a 2 hour long mumble.
