The access and spread of information has basically ruined figuring out a game these days.

Now the second something is released people are out there knowing everything there is to know and making YouTube videos. You jump in with your friends and theres always one guy whos up to date and knows the entire game already too. Am I the only one that still likes to go in blind, figure shit out at my own pace or in this case, together.

Idk why people are in such a rush to know everything right away

This is why I make pacts with people I intend to play with, full blackout.

There's no hope for that if it's all just gaming acquaintances in an online campaign, or something. I'm talking more for, like, Pokemon.

That one dick of a friend that beat the game before everyone else and trudged through forward and clearing the path before you even know what the hell is going on

This is actually coming up with a Minecraft server I spun up recently with some high school friends, to play during corona time. One friend has been doing all this research to build the most optimal resources farms and stuff, which is fine I guess, but definitely not how I like to play the game personally.

He also keeps bugging me to give him the world's seed number, which is the initial number chosen by the game that dictates how the random world generation algorithm plays out. If you have the number, you can essentially use a bunch of online tools to figure out exactly where all the good stuff is in the world.

I'm like... eh I don't really want to do that. We're playing survival mode, where exploration is kind of one of the central gameplay features... There's already so much information online about Minecraft anyway, that it doesn't take long to figure out how the game's systems work at a very detailed level. IMO giving out the seed number is just shortcutting the fun out of it.

He also jumped into the nether ASAP and entered the End dimension without me or any of our friends because he wanted to do it first. Not a huge deal there but it's just kind of how he tries to play the game... really competitive and optimization-heavy. Whereas I'm just dicking around making maps and shit

My thing is there's barely anything that matches going through a simple coop campaign anymore. Either the gameplay is just dealing with a shitload of enemies or you've both got to level up gear and equipment and find loot so you're never really on the same playing field unless you both start at the same time or you both basically treat it as your one game.

Tbh my favourite coop experiences are quirkly little indie games these days.

I've only gone into Dark Souls games not completely blind since it's easy to fuck up a questline and you're out of luck until the next playthrough

But for anything else where co-op is possible, I don't act like that person that knows where everything is. For example I completed The Division 2 story a year ago and when some newbie player matchmakes with me I let them lead missions and just provide support

I don't mind knowing how shit works, but the problem is the jackweed dataminers who are able to determine 100% the "best" gun/item/whatever in a given game based on frame data and thousands of simulations, thus causing the entire sheep internet to flock to said gun/item

It's why Warzone is currently called Grauzone

Gamers have become terrible for this.

Ive always rubbed against the idea of min/maxing

I just wanna have fun. I really could give a shit what the best weapon/item/character is. I just wanna play the thing I think is the most interesting.

But so many people are unable to even function in a game if they arent using what the community has determined is top tier

Which is often hilariously inaccurate because they follow patch notes like gospel even though they purposely lie sometimes. I honestly believe theres some gamer placebo out there and someone needs to do some research on it.

This is one of the reasons that I don't play FFXIV anymore. I just want to run the dungeon blind, but there's a tremendous amount of pressure to know all the mechanics before you even enter.

Tryhards will always be a thing in gaming, its just getting worse.

I played Div 2 as well with some all red dps guys. They rush ahead desperate to get the most kills and i walk along behind looting all the bodies while i drink a beer.

That depends on the game though. For example, in Teamfight Tactics (Riot game's "autochess" game played from inside the League of Legends client), you can see a ton of Youtubers put up the most popular, consistent "comps" for climbing in ranked, and you can also find websites that show win rates and stuff for them, but the game actually makes you rank up by getting Top 4, not neccesarily winning.

Also there's an issue of a shared pool of units, the more people go for a certain comp, the least 2* and 3* units they will be able to make.

I can see the whole datamining and shit being a problem for some games, but not for all of them. I think it's more problematic for FPS games and Battle Royales where a certain gun can give you an advantage that doesn't rely on strategy or tactics, just mechanical skill/reflexes.

For me, a good casual game night probably has both. But generally I agree

FFXIV in general and especially after ARR has always been a cesspool of elitist pricks.

The WORST MMORPG experience I've ever had. Even WoW, which has been out for 15+ years doesn't have so many assholes in it.

Oh god this is so true of modern MMO design. Its no longer about even playing your class.

Its a clown fiesta of particle effects, abilities, UI and whatever else. And youre 100% right. The community gets really shitty if you dont go on YouTube and learn all the ticky tack mechanics for every stupid dungeon

This is somewhat avoided in Wakfu. Part of it is because a lot of the lategame content guides are in French, and part because, even with a guide, the lategame content is so complex that you need to practice it anyways. It is normal for guilds rising up in the ranks to do runs where they expect to die before the boss, just so they know how to handle each particular enemy's quirks.

I have a friend who I play path of exile with every so often when there's a new league and we manage to do it by basically doing this. Start together, don't play without the other person, and don't trade with anyone else until late endgame.

basically turns a big MMO sort of game into a nice compartmentalized co-op campaign game
