No one is calling for all Lincoln statues, but shouldn't it be obvious why one with a kneeling slave should be taken down?

They destroyed a statue of John McDonogh in a New Orleans park yesterday. McDonogh left almost all of his fortune to build public schools in Baltimore and New Orleans for freed black children and that move was considered controversial at the time, with his heirs trying to contest.

That interpretation can be seen as pretty condescending, which is what they mention in the article about "submissiveness." Like a black slave needs a white man's protection. It doesn't really scream inspiration to anyone.

I hold a favorable view of Lincoln in spite of efforts to repaint him as a "typical Republican."

This statute can probably go. The image of a Black man on his knees is not what America needs right now.

That statue can't be more than 50 years old. Regardless of what time period it was reflecting or what time it was built, it is not appropriate for the time we're in now, and hasn't been for many years. I'm not sure what your point is supposed to be.

TBH I think it's long overdue that we build another CSA/Civil War museum. There's already lots of preserved plantations that offer tours and education on the horrors of slavery and I'm sure one of them somewhere would be okay building a new place nearby to store and display more Confederate art & memorabilia.

I also want to point out that this is such a dumb thing to worry about. you yourself are acting like people asking for it to be moved to a museum are making such an outlandish "demand"...if its interpretation, as you yourself said, can be taken as problematic, maybe we do put it in a museum where context will be better established and replace it in public with something else. That hurts no one and there are only benefits to it. If your counter argument is "slippery slope!" then its even worse because you're crying about something that hasn't happened and likely won't.

Its so weird that adapting to the times is seen as such a bad thing to Republicans. They will fight to the death to cling to every morsel reminder of slavery they can for some reason. Moving that statue would not sanitize history. No one is trying to ignore it. As we grow as a nation and get better, we have a better understanding of what things to glorify and how to do it. Your logic indicates that a statue of a slave in chains would be ok because its our history, but smart people know its not a history we need to salute in public.
