I saw the same attitudes here so don't tell me that's just neogaf. People don't seem to realize how pessimistic everybody was about Switch and Nintendo back then. I think people have really forgotten that

For context, this was what people thought right after Nintendo had their big reveal event for Switch, showcasing games like BOTW, ARMS, splatoon 2, Mario Odyssey, 1-2 Switch, etc. and the details about pricing, release date, etc.

Nintendo botching the WiiU and then giving up on it so fast didn't exactly inspire a lot of faith in it. The pessimism wasn't exactly unwarranted.

Pessimism is one thing but back then people were downright predicting such a spectacular failure that it'd prompt Nintendo to leave the console/hardware game altogether

Yes. Because it was starting to look like a Sega Dreamcast situation for them, but they ended up turning things around.

It was more so because of the WiiU...that and the way they initially pitched it. The Joycons are still annoyingly small, i still count that as a strike against them, but the main selling point was using those small controllers to play on a small screen on a basketball court or rooftop...No one's doing that.
