The whole moral of that movie (I confess I never read the book) was that it was bad to judge people based on apperances and reputation.

Shrek is a giant ugly stinky ogre with no friends but he's actually a cool guy.

Fiona isn't a sexy lady but a giant fat ugly monster and that's cool.

The Dragon is a giant fire-breathing abomination but actually just a lonely kind girl looking for some companionship

Donkey may be an ass but... well okay that one had no layers i guess

But Lord Farquaad? He looks like a tiny ugly evil selfish cruel vindictive man, has the reputation of a tiny ugly evil selfish cruel vindictive man.... then turns out to be a tiny ugly evil selfish cruel vindictive man That seems to counteract what they were doing with everyone else.

Despite being worse movies, Prince Charming and the Fairy Godmother were more apt villains in the sequels. They fit the moral of the story better.

What does Lord Faquaad teach kids? Assume tiny odd looking people are evil and treat them with disdain? Warwick Davis is a national treasure.

Did he though?

He just used her for personal gains like a tool. He didn't seem to show any real affection or awarness of her pregnancy and kids and the only times she turns up in the movies after Fiona's escape, they're just using her.

Donkey never really expressed anything beyond being an ass except that he could talk. But Donkeys don't really have reputations or apperances so it's not relant to the moral like it was with Shrek and Fiona

I don't think this is entirely accurate. he doesn't have the reputation for being tiny and ugly at the start. Lord Farquad wants to be perceived as bigger, both literally and figuratively (i.e. "more important") than he really is.

(note: it's been a while since I've seen the movie, so I'm going by memory. some of this information might not be entirely accurate)

I believe his first scene is him torturing the gingerbread man, someone much smaller than him. and it's set up to make him appear big.

Duloc is also notably an extremely artificial place (the mechanical dancers saying how "perfect" it is draw obvious parallels to Disneyland, though that's another issue). everything is fake, including Farquad's self-importance.

even when Shrek is fighting the soldiers, Farquad is far above him, giving an appearance of grandeur. just because this facade is shattered fairly early on in the movie doesn't mean it's not there.

Farquad wants to be seen as something he's not, making him a direct foil to Shrek, who wants to be seen as who he is.

Yeah. Remember at the start where he scares everyone away, tries repeatedly to get rid of Donkey, and tells Fiona he's not interested in her?

Sure, we learn he has understandable reasons for this, but he still grows over the course of the story.

Farquaad is basically ordering a genocide on magical creatures. not even remotely close to the same thing.

again: Farquaad exerts all this power, has all the buildings in Duloc built up so high, does all this stuff so that people will see him as something that he isn't. Shrek puts up walls because people see him for something that he isn't and he's become jaded
