Odd that people didn't complain as much then. It's almost like putting decent writing as a higher priority than the social issues is better than how the modern comics just throw in random things to try to appeal to people who don't read comics in the first place with no regard for the quality of writing. Imagine that.

Agreed, that 2016 comic about a black guy demanding to know what Green Lantern has done about racism against blacks is an example of poorly inserting politics into media.

There are times where it becomes a little...ludicrous.

But generally yes comics have a well storied history of such things and probably more often then not are right or at least have their heart in the right place.

It is irritating when it gets a little too heavy handed though. And occasionally offensive when they dont do their research or otherwise mess it up.

What people define as SJW stuff is ineffectual preachy nonsense pandered towards some imaginary audience that doesn't exist. If you look at that infamous Thor's grandfather scene and think that's in any way of the same vein of messaging of the X-Men, then there's something very wrong.

There was a period where DC comics teamed up the Hal Jordan Green Lantern (a conservative) and the Oliver Queen Green Arrow (a liberal) had them travel across the USA dealing with different problems and social issues. This was in the seventies and eighties.

It turns out, though, that annoying your readers is not a good way to get more readers--and is, therefore, contrary to the idea of spreading a positive message to a wide audience. When you go hyper-political and play for 'gotcha!' points, you end up losing your chance to influence the opinions of the people who disagree with you.

I think it's safe to say that this comic won't sell very well unless it tones down the hyper-political tone. There's allegory (Mutants = Minorities) and then there's "Haha, take that, BIGOT!" and the difference is in the quality of writing. The former is smart and can change the views of people who don't realize their views are being changed; the latter usually ends up being a string of pot-shots taken by a hack who wants to sling insults and tout his/her/their political opinion.

That was when Bendis wrote her right? Because he wrote her as an unlikable and insufferable character. Seeing how she's based on his daughter he might be trying to say something.

Great post & I agree completely.

The problem isn't necessarily the message, it's the overbearing tone & how poorly some of the writing has been done.

Im just saying that the most iconic superheroes aren't tactful in the messages they spread and comics do like to beat people over the head with their messages to make sure you understand what they're saying.

They can be subtle as well, but we can't forget their history and origins. Black Panther and Black Lightning literally wear their message
