There are a few bad apples, but communities need cops for maintain order. They should get the funds from another area to help the lesser areas. Taking away resources from cops will just lead to mayhem. Then people will complain about higher crimes. Chicago alone is a prime example. Imagine defunding the cops there.

If I understand correctly, the argument for defunding police is to make society so great for everyone, that no one will be motivated to commit crimes. Anyone saying they dont want to actually get rid of police isnt being truthful. They do want to get rid of police, and maybe that is not automatically a bad thing. Their plan is to replace cops with social workers, mental health experts and such. Ideally, this will create a much less violent environment for everyone.

Id like to see a big city try this out.

You're probably right, but a lot of people are so frustrated that they want to give other options a try.

Anyway, I say good luck to those efforts, and Im not being sarcastic. Their vision for the future does sound sweet, but I get that its hard to imagine it coming true.

Defunding usually means to put that money towards creating other responders so that cops don't have to deal with the homeless, mental health, addiction, and so-on when they clearly do not have the training for it.

You don't send in a beat cop to do the work of the bomb squad, so why do we have beat cops having to deal with someone who is having a mental health issue? That shouldn't be part of their job description.

Hopefully I'm wrong but the idea that unarmed people are going to start responding to public disturbance calls doesn't seem realistic to me. It will take exactly one of these people being harmed before everyone in town reverses their feelings

A lot of the problem comes from the name. Instead of calling it defunding or abolishing the police, it should instead be called reallocating funds and responsibilities of the police.

I agree we need cops, but Chris Rock convinced me that there should be NO bad apples. The training must be on point. Their mental stability must be accounted for at all times.

Whenever the cops gun down an innocent black man they always say the same thing. Its not most cops. Its just a few bad apples. Bad apple? That almost sounds nice. Ive had a bad apple. It was tart. But it didnt choke me out. Heres the thing. I know its hard being a cop. I know its hard. I know that shits dangerous. I know it is, ok? But some jobs cant have bad apples. Some jobs, everybody gotta be good. Like pilots. You know? American Airlines cant be like, Most of our pilots like to land. We just got a few bad apples that like to crash into mountains. Please bear with us.

We don't want surgeons to be having a bad day while performing heart surgery. We don't want pilots crashing every other day.

Defunding = Using some of the millions they use on military equipment for other necessary programs. Cops are used as a "one stop shop" for any problem in the book.

Imagine a rural area without cops. If something were to go wrong imagine the lawsuit. Domestic is usually the main issue in rural area along with driving under the influence. Cops deal with domestic cause by the time they show it things could get violent.

it makes no sense if the extent of research you've done into the meaning is reading the words "Defund the police". Which, seems to be what you've done.

Defunding the police isn't about getting rid of all cops, it's about reducing the amount of things cops are expected to do. This results in needing less cops. This results in being able to have a higher standard of who cops hire. This results in no longer needing to protect bad cops who are killing innocent people, often without consequences.

Yes, I don't think most cops are bad people, I do think most of them do want to do their best and protect their community. But, just not being a bad cop isn't enough when cops and their unions are protecting those bad cops.

A basic tenet in any form of security, defense, even military is focusing 90% of effort on risk mitigation. If crises are unable to happen because people are taken care of beforehand, that's appropriate risk mitigation. Even the police understand this, they push back because they have a jar head culture and think they should be above the law in every instance.

So actually it makes a lot of sense and is the preferred method of doing things in every group, particularly homeland security and the like, that is not the police.
