Coronavirus patients without symptoms arent driving the spread of the virus, World Health Organization officials said Monday, casting doubt on concerns by some researchers that the disease could be difficult to contain due to asymptomatic infections.

Some people, particularly young and otherwise healthy individuals, who are infected by the coronavirus never develop symptoms or only develop mild symptoms. Others might not develop symptoms until days after they were actually infected.

Preliminary evidence from the earliest outbreaks indicated that the virus could spread from person-to-person contact, even if the carrier didnt have symptoms. But WHO officials now say that while asymptomatic spread can occur, it is not the main way its being transmitted.

From the data we have, it still seems to be rare that an asymptomatic person actually transmits onward to a secondary individual, Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, head of WHOs emerging diseases and zoonosis unit, said at a news briefing from the United Nations agencys Geneva headquarters. Its very rare.

Good information if true, however, conflicting information once again from the WHO.

Conflicting? Or changing according to what their data suggests?

like I said in an earlier topic:

you're obviously not going to be spreading it much if you're not coughing. as soon as you start coughing you're no longer asymptomatic.

If you count a cough as a symptom, then yes, they have conflicting information. It's literally on their website.

I'm interested as to why that was your first takeaway from my post though

I've observed a large Covid outbreak recently and the vast majority of patients in the facility were asymptomatic.

Coughing has been considered a symptom for a long time, though. It you're coughing, you aren't asymptomatic.

Why do you call that conflicting?

Deleted my earlier post. I now realize the point about the asymptomatic spread is the conflicting part, not the part about coughing.

My mistake.

I mean, can't it be very rare and also an important contributor to the pandemic?

For those who don't want to read through the whole article. Basically, they're basing this off contact tracing, but we still don't know for sure. So stay safe out there.

More research and data are needed to truly answer the question of whether the coronavirus can spread widely through asymptomatic carriers, Van Kerkhove added.
We have a number of reports from countries who are doing very detailed contact tracing, she said. Theyre following asymptomatic cases. Theyre following contacts. And theyre not finding secondary transmission onward. Its very rare.

It was an asymptomatic carrier that brought it to England right?

Rare can be relative really. Good that it's less common but I feel like that was already common sense as if you're not coughing around someone that only leaves breathing around them(unless you kiss them or something)

Like we've always done? The culture in the US is such that people commonly get in trouble for calling in sick so they come to work sick.

No, between China, South Korea, Italy, Iran, France and the US, over half a billion infections were prevented by the lockdowns.
