Not exactly. Human society is a failure for most and a success for an elite group that exploit and pit the rest of humanity against each other. It doesn't have to be this way though.

nah, humanity is awesome. every day there is something that impresses me, and I am thankful for every day that I have lived.
yeah, bad stuff happens, but it's outweighed by all the good. progress is made every day, a little bit at a time.

This. Not that life on Earth has a "goal", but we're the only animals that we know of in all the cosmos that have any awareness of the greater universe and its rules. Not sure what would constitute a success if not that.

Which animals eat their own children? Usually that's a last measure for starvation.

Regardless, I never said that other animals aren't brutal. Just that they don't delude and bullshit themselves thinking they exist for some higher purpose.

This is pretty common among rodents and fish. Not even a starvation thing, pet owners will usually have to separate new brood from the mother. More of an instinctual fluke.

Lots of mammals (hamsters and cats come to mind) will eat their own newborn children if they feel unsafe. Doesn't even matter if they actually are unsafe. But anyway, in my view humans aren't any more brutal than other animals. We just have the smarts to be more dangerous. Give a group of lions enough time and they will surely destroy each other. Difference is that we can build things to improve our lives.

Pretty sure it was Guinea Pigs that will eat their own kids. Or one of those common rodents people use as pets. Ive seen enough people complain about it.

a higher purpose doesnt give people a motivation to be terrible. It gives them an excuse.

you get rid of religion, politics, wealth class, eventually some kind of distinction is going to be made, and some sociopathic megalomaniac is going to exploit that and we start Mr Bones Wild Ride all over again

It's actually a requirement for survival. Every society and culture in human history has developed some form of explaining existence. Gods, deities, etc. A need for meaning is intrinsic in humans. And when that rival tribe over the hillside has a completely different set of gods, that threatens the very fabric of your own tribe's existence, and they must be killed.

It's easy to brainwash people when that need for importance is so strong.

No, because I have no reasonable or objective metrics to measure success. Without a clear goal or purpose to humanity, it is difficult to call it a failure.

I wanted to say something similar but I made my post right before it hit me.

There is no benchmark to compare humanity to, we don't interact with a sentient species that has demonstrated better character than our society, so all we have is the ability to look at ourselves and ask if we're doing all we can to do right by ourselves. So in that regard, it may look bad for some of what humanity causes upon itself, but realistically maybe it's all that the human psyche is capable of. There are some things that you just can't wean out of the way the human mind works, even if we don't think they're beneficial to a working society.

No, I dont think humanity is a failure.

Our population has exploded and we mold the environment to suit our own needs. We have split the atom and are exploring outer space, in one form or another. You could make an argument that the methods have been unethical or maybe immoral in some way, but the results are based on us, as a species, being the exact opposite of a failure.
