Such as a cashier not taking her expired coupons, or a store not wanting to honor a $50 price difference because someone dropped a fancy hair curler in the bread rack and the tag there only says $1, so she should get it for $1. Those are just examples, but the core concept is the same.

First time I've heard the term outside of Cop Block.

Literally had to tell a Karen today "It doesn't matter how much you yell at me, we don't have adderall in stock." The last thing she needed was more stimulant narcotics, too.

As noted, its not a meme. There are real people who act like that. They are called "karens" because that just sorta became the default name used for the sake of protecting their actual identity when talking about them.

They really bad ones are quite rare, but the less extreme versions are something you can probably bet to run into at least once if you work a year at a retail store.

You know, I'd never heard of either the name or the phenomenon before a couple weeks ago, but after working a couple years in a diner it's hard not to notice that like 80-90% of complaints come from women. Particularly middle-aged women. Had a woman a few months ago who ordered a spinach strawberry salad, ate it all, and then tried to get it taken off the bill because she was convinced that it had regular walnuts on it instead of candied walnuts. (It didn't.) It's usually not quite so ridiculous, but it's at the point where I just expect if I have to go out front and talk to somebody it's going to be a woman.

Lol. Cause it was relevant. Black people used it first and those are the people Karen uses the police for. With white people Karen just complains a lot or goes to a manager instead, so that's how they displayed it. Anywho, the Karen thing has been a, well, thing for quite a while. The general use of that name as a proxy to protect identity (of both teller and whoever they talk to) is a thing that started years ago on a collection of somewhat, shall we say, similarly themed subreddits, to what I can understand. An "i dont work here lady" one (self explanitory), a "malicious compliance" one (often office workers getting a jerk coworker or boss or karen in trouble because they just do what is literally demanded of them while keeping detailed records, until it ends up causing something bad to happen because they took the instructions exactly as they were demanded to), those sorts of places.

Never been there myself. There is a youtuber called rslash who just picks out some of the best stories from a variety of these reddits and reads them aloud.
