I'd be hesitant to call the people that have made the news by breaking into someone's house and killing an occupant, to be fair.

Some departments have people that respond to burlgary reports without weapons.

When police respond disproportionately to non people of color, then yes its privilege. And again, with recent events its tone deaf to call police if there is peaceful looting and property damage if its being done in a safe way

if I was black I'd think twice before calling the police after a burglary. I have seen stories where that exact thing happens and then they kill the home owner. there have been cases of police showing up and thinking the black home owner is the robber.

They never show up on time.
When they do show up an hour later they waste even more time.
They never resolve shit anyway.

Its just more unneeded stress after an already shitty event. Just bust out the amendment if your home is actively being broken into, and if you find your home/car/whatever broken into tough shit, cops DEFINITELY wont be a help there either.

Progressives are going to take over the narrative around policing in this country and the opportunity for actual reform is just going to be squandered.

There's a reason so many black people were kicking these people out of their protest.

I get the overall point she is making. A white person doesn't think twice about calling the police in the middle of the night because the odds of a mix-up happening and the caller getting harassed or injured by the police are disproportionately lower compared to black people.

That said, if you want more wide-scale support for the idea of defunding the police, there needs to be a pretty solid answer for the question of "who will call if I feel I'm in danger". The current system is certainly not perfect but it does at least give people some course of action. Removing that without a strong substitute is going to make people uneasy.

There is no such thing as peaceful looting and property damage. What the looters were doing was not what the founders had in mind when they wrote the First Amendment.

Well, we should discuss it with them over a tea party.

Thankfully the new system will handle this properly. A social worker will be dispatched to see if the burglar is suffering from any emotional distress.

I don't think I've ever heard of those. But I have heard of people calling the police after shooting a burglar and identifying the now dead burglar as the victim when calling.

Hey, cool, let's go to extremes.

I doubt the police system is going to be completely dismantled. But if compromise is going to happen, why not start with the strongest argument first and be negotiated down from there?

1.4 million burglaries in 2017 in the US.

940k of those were houses.

986 total people were shot and killed by the police in 2017 in the US. 70 of these people were unarmed. 22 were black and unarmed.

I don't see any statistics that support this notion to disband the police.

Here's the rest of her answer:
"We've done an analysis of all the reasons people call 911 and have looked up ways we can shift the response away from our armed police officers into a more appropriate response for mental health calls, for some domestic violence calls, for health-related issues,"

She doesn't actually answer the question.
