Employment stunningly rose by 2.5 million in May and the jobless rate declined to 13.3% according to data Friday from the Labor Department that was far better than economists had been expecting and indicated that an economic turnaround could be close at hand.

Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been expecting payrolls to drop by 8.333 million and the unemployment rate to rise to 19.5% from Aprils 14.7%.

Well that was unexpected.

Pretty much this...

It amazes me that so many people have just "decided" that COVID-19 is over with. It's incredibly frustrating to see the United States continuing to struggle with COVID-19 when South Korea is getting less cases per day than many US cities now.

Stop whining about this shit, people need to work for money to live unless you have a better plan. A pandemic doesn't stop the bill collectors from knocking.

I agree, but the reasons I compare the US to South Korea in this regard:

  1. The US and South Korea both reported their first COVID-19 cases on the same day
  2. South Korea has a competent government while the US does not
  3. People in South Korea followed quarantine guidelines for a few weeks and got through the worst of it very quickly. Comparatively, the US has waayyy to many people who think COVID-19 is some liberal government hoax funded by George Soros to make Trump lose the election and take our rights away, so we're STILL not over it MONTHS LATER.

It's fucking frustrating. The quarantine wasn't supposed to last this god damn long at all.

And even though evictions and foreclosures were temporarily put on hold, watch landlords and lenders bill for 4 months of back rent and back mortgage all at once, because I bet there won't be a rule in place to prevent that.

The way I see it, you're angry at a country for being shit when your own life is probably just fine.

To me that seems like you're just raging yourself up and making yourself miserable. That's why this board is pissing me off. I have nothing to be angry about in my own life but the world is acting like I need to be angry for the injustices of others.

I don't WANT to be angry. Being angry sucks because it boils your blood and makes you liable to lash out.

I guess what I'm saying is I wish everyone didn't have a "you're either part of the solution or part of the problem" mentality. Things AREN'T that black and white and by making them so, you're just amping people up who didn't want to get involved.

No, I'm tired. Years ago I cared about being active and outraged at social injustice but years of seeing nothing change has worn me down and made me susceptible to making irrationality. Now it just depresses me instead of energizes me and I want out from it all.

My own life isn't "just fine," though. I'm still quarantining and not going to the gym like I used to, not going to movie theaters like I used to, and not going to see my mom every couple weeks like I used to because I don't want to get COVID-19, be unknowingly asymptomatic, and then get my mom infected with COVID-19.

So I think I have a right to be fucking frustrated.

Yes, places of employment opened back up and the employees stopped drawing unemployment. This is not surprising. You won't see the full permanent effect until it becomes clear what jobs are simply gone for good.
Also, we opened to soon and are going to spread this shit again like wildfire which will have even worse long term side effects.

I'm not sure where I stand on that. I'd like another stimulus, sure, but at the same time I don't like temporary solutions to bigger problems.

What I think needs to happen is getting some sort of COVID-19 treatment on the market needs to be made the highest priority possible and the government needs to subsidize its production and distribution. Like zero red-tape when it comes to human trials and getting it approved. Treat its execution like a military operation and make no excuses for it once it's ready to go. Vaccination stations need to pop up all over large metropolitan areas and the federal government should finance those.

Supposedly there is a COVID-19 vaccine that's in human trials right now so the government ought to focus in on that more than anything. To me this feels like wishful thinking but I don't really know what's better (maybe the government is doing everything that they can within the confines of releasing a safe drug into the market en masse but I doubt it).

Uhh, yeah, the US death toll from COVID-19 is already at 110,000 and a lot more people are likely going to die from it because the US has not handled the pandemic well at all.

And no, the U.S. was NOT doing really well. "Because the US is not South Korea" is not at all a logical argument or evidence that the US handled it well.

  1. Trump fired the US' pandemic response team in 2018
  2. Trump repeatedly ignored advice from the WHO, the CDC, and US healthcare industry experts on how to handle the pandemic
  3. Trump repeatedly downplayed the severity of the pandemic for months.
  4. Way too many people in the US STILL believe COVID-19 is some liberal government hoax. We've had multiple examples of people in the US claiming it's a hoax and then changing their tune after they get COVID-19 and recommending that we actually take it seriously.

Even while social distancing guideline and quarantine orders went into effect, we had way too many people just flat out ignoring social distancing guidelines and not quarantining, which contributed to an increase in infections.

South Korea, by comparison, has a competent government, put in place a national plan to deal with the spread of the virus, and the vast majority of people in South Korea followed those guidelines well, which is why they were able to get back to a relative normal very quickly. Meanwhile in the US, people are still quarantining months later.

Yes, recent events have made it even worse, but let's not try to pretend we handled the pandemic well as a country before the protests and riots.

weirdly enough, the period where i have been WFH due to COVID-19 has probably been the most productive period of my career in terms of new job opportunities.

so far i have had 4 different recruiters reach out to me with pretty good job opportunities (ended up taking one, start the new job on Monday). I haven't even been looking, they just found me on Linkedin or w/e. a bunch of people i know have switched jobs during quarantine, and at my current company, two other people on my team are starting new roles as well.

it is pretty crazy, i am in the fintech/accounting field so maybe there is always a demand, and maybe people are hiring now because it's so easy to interview homebound people.
