for the most part, I didn't really care about reviews that he gave to movies, but I enjoyed watching Siskel and Ebert, when I was a kid, and I at least respected what he did.

I think that I stopped watching when it became Ebert and Roeper.

nothing against Roeper, but it was what it was.

oh yeah that show was interesting, and i agree siskel was the more interesting character over roeper. But i agreed with ebert's reviews much more than siskel. siskel liked to trash really popular movies.

He's all right. In my opinion, he was way too harsh on lowbrow genre entertainment, but also way too finicky about highbrow art films. Very middlebrow kind of guy, and I much prefer my films to be high or low art. That said, when he was in his element, he was quite intelligent and fun to read, and he always struck me as the kind of person whose reviews came from a place of sincerity.

yeah he did say that negative stuff about video games but i did disagree with him. Thought mgs1 did pull off the , feeling like you're playing an action movie. Though iirc ebert vehemently disagreed with videogames being art.

he's pretty good but much inferior to his fellow chicago critic Johnathan Rosenbaum

and yeah there are a lot of career movie critics, who are well known who don't really seem to love movies, he's clearly was deeply passionate

I might be remembering wrong, but I think that he either said that video games could be art, or that he didn't know enough about video games to make that distinction later in his life

Yeah. It's mostly retroactive. I didn't actually watch At the Movies until years later, but I did read Ebert's articles and I found him mostly insightful and entertaining.

I agreed with his opinions 50% of the time, but I was entertained by them 80% of the time. He did generalize horror movies as mindless and invariably sexist. That is a mark against him which earned him a "cameo" in They Live. Other than that, he was pretty fun. And even his criticisms of horror, unfair though they may have sometimes been, were still pretty entertaining in their own right.

The important part is that both he and Siskel liked Infra-Man and I hope to review that film with both of them someday when I get to go to Movie Heaven. :)
