Are they games?

I must know where the board stands.

Question for the VNs aren't games club, do you consider Candyland or Snakes and Ladders to be games?

So are we just making this poll again whenever the one before it purges?

this one is setup explicitly to determine how many people hold a double standard with regards to VNs and CYAs. I dont recall any previous topics/polls that were specifically meant to do that

I mean, nothing in this topic says anything about VIDEO games.

VNs have a spread of player interaction, from some that are a sort of point-and-click adventure to some that don't even have the illusion of letting you roll a die to fake agency. But at least Candy Land and Chutes & Ladders have human interaction.

A book is a book. Just cause you jump from page 5 to page 87 doesn't change that. You're just choosing the direction the book goes in. You're not interacting with it non-stop like a game

I'm entertaining your question, but I don't feel that strongly one way or the other. The only thing I do feel strongly about is that VNs should not be in games contests ever.

Poor Phoenix Wright/Life Is Strange/Danganronpa/The Walking Dead

Puzzle games, for example, point-and-click games aren't games?

ah

well, in a pure setting where a VN is just reading with pictures and you make absolutely no decisions, then i'd say a CYOA book is more of a game than a VN.

But I would also classify something like Life is Strange as a VN and be done with caring, so

I feel like story-based puzzle games need to be considered their own thing separate from being lumped in with other visual novels. Something like Ace Attorney or Professor Layton is a different classification from Umineko.

The categories of books and games aren't mutually exclusive. CYOA is a game in that there are rules, and the reader/player makes decisions that change the outcome.

Would you consider the Telltale games to be closer to Umineko than Ace Attorney?

I don't really have any experience with them, so I can't say definitively.

If I bought it off of a video game platform like Steam, or are playing it on a video game console, it's a video game full stop.

VNs are video books.

I don't see why people are okay with the idea of audio books but not video books.

I thought movies (with subtitles?) were video books.
