Most of it stems back to Reagan. Also no one outside of a few wack-jobs says that about Obama or Clinton, or hell even Nixon, even though he was awful.

Between supplying Afghani insurgency groups with weapons and getting rid of state mental hospitals, Reagan is pretty much the inadvertent champion of terrorism both domestic and foreign.

Ignored AIDs and crack epidemics until they were well rooted. Then began his war on drugs and tough on crime campaigns, while conveniently pushing for more privatised prisons.

Pretty much the granddaddy of American jingoism. Though Trump is currently it's daddy.

Easily, yes. You can't argue that anyone is worse in context with the times for each President. 9/11 set us back as a country, Obama helped us take several steps forward, and Trump has already reset us back to at least our worst after 2001, probably lower.

I think there's a little similarity between them too. Buchanan is often considered the worst president, or one of the worst, because of his lack of leadership and inaction during heavy nation-wide tensions which ended up leading to the Civil War. It was a very difficult situation for any president to come in and handle, but he handled it badly in any case.

Similarly, I don't want to create the false idea that it was easy for Trump to handle the pandemic and nation-wide unrest among African Americans now. But definitely without a doubt everyone should be able to agree he hasn't been doing a very great job at calming the country and leading us through it over the last few months. Obviously there's a difference between the Civil War and the disasters now , but in both cases here there's a lack of consistent solidarity and leadership.

You could also argue Trump is closer to Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln. Johnson was, being generous, a confederate sympathizer, and following the Civil War sabotaged reconstruction so badly he basically gave white southerners all the power they had prior to the civil war, short of actually reallowing slavery.

Botching reconstruction this badly is one of the major reasons we still have a major class divide. Given current events, we also see Trump actively working this angle too.

Trump is really working for that "worst president of all time" prize.
